Bad luck top hose gone
Smoke from the bonnet day 1, luckily only a top hose although sadly no chance of getting it fixed today as I don't know where to get one, gutted, wanted to surprise the mrs to the airport tonorrow :-(

Bad luck.
Dealer (about £30) or DECENT motor factor and even then under order, about £20.
Drain and refill coolant while doing the job, a quick search on here for the safe method of refilling will see it done without airlocks...which are all but impossible to clear once they occur

Think his is a bug, happens on all Imprezas, mine did it a year or so ago got one from a local scrappy as a quick fix, then just waited for some samco's to pop up, rad's like to pop too, just had to fit a Japspeed alloy one last week.

Oh guys that's very supportive, I know Dorking very well and could post a pic to show you if it's the right one, thanks very much. The garage have repaired it for now and once I left I had loads of smoke burning off from the spilt coolant - hopefully it's just this and not the sign of a bigger problem

I had the exact same problem on myne when on way to work. was infuriating. Easy enough to change but as pointed out above. Make sure you refill the coolant via the top turbo hose

Here is a link to the hose and also the way we repaired it too, frightened to drive the car now!!! Few knocks happening here and there upon pressing the gas on and releasing, doesnt feel like anything serious

You do know how much they cost to replace don't you chap, certainly not a job to do if you don't actually need them changing.
Stop panicking and get the hose replaced.

jesus, headgasket cos rad hose goes, thats a bit like using a nuke to kill a spider lol
its a rubber hose, they perish and split. scares the crap out of you when they do go, mine went with no warning soi just ended up with a massive steam cloud out the back of the car (was doing 70 when it went). As long as you didnt try to drive it for miles without coolant will be fine. Mine lasted another 30k miles after before new owner through car over a hedge and wrote it off.

Ok, you're right just thinking preventatively. The rad is apparently less than £200 to buy and I can have it fitted for £50 which I was surprised about. I would happily have this done along with a big service 6 months time in order to keep everything nice and new

And don't mess around with second hand hoses. New ones cost bugger all...

Raditor should be under £80 And had rusted at the bottom after 14 years
I Had mine replaced last year by rob the master technician when he swapped all my hoses for samcos
I told the misses the samcos were only £60 and all needed replacing incase they split

Had the same thing happen. Had to get gaffa tape and wrap loads round it to travel 25 mile back home. Lucky was near a garage. To it looks like they sit to close to the electric fan
