Does this sound like a front diff problem?
Straight line and turning left its absolutely fine but when turning a sharp right on fill lock at slow speed can hear a clunk clunk clunk, had cv checked out told it was fine so wondering could it be the diff or is there more tell tale signs?

i hope its not the diff
i had mine go , it started as a horrable clunking noise on full lock at slow speeds, didnt matter which direction .could also feel it through the steering wheel, it was more a crunching clunking noise
thought at first cv joints but turned out to be the diff in the gearbox , cost around £800
i left it for a long time untill the car started to sound like it was electric when accelerating, something to do with the gearbox .
i am a bit annoyed that my gearbox wasnt checked over and refurbed while it was out because not to long after i have a very slight , not crunch but not a smooth change on one of the gears cant remember which because the cars been of the road a couple of years now.
at the time i heard something about using mismatched tyres or like one tyre on one side having much less wear than the other can cause it but that seems like bs to me , but after spending £800 to fix it i wouldnt take the chance.
my car is a classic sti6 btw

[QUOTE=angel1368;11603741]Thank you for the comment mate really appreciate it, any way do you know i can tell for sure what it is as i thought maybe cv joints[/QUOTE
Try driving the car on full lock when the gearbox is cold , I had same sort of problems but only when the car was warmed up , something to do with the fluid in the diff warming up causing it to lock up , hopefully it's nothing major

so your problem was sorted with a diff oil change?

When my front diff went on my old classic the car started jumping and making horrible loud banging noises, the next day all my gearbox oil was on the floor it had literally **** itself ....

Mine was on a p1 gearbox , I had to replace the viscous centre diff , they are a sealed item with a special fluid inside them that when it gets hot causes the fluid to go hard which locks the diff causing the juddering , hopping feel on full lock , I tried a gearbox oil change first but it didn't fix it ,

It would have been cheaper for me to put a second hand box in mine when it went , but I'm not to know if that one would fail and have the same problem 6 months later , so opted for the brand new diff , you might get a second hand box and have no problems at all , I didn't take the gamble

I replaced it with a second hand box and put a new clutch in it while the box was out, done it myself pretty straightforward bought the box of matty at mb developments never had a problem with it after that ...

it made the noise first thing this morning when it was stone cold so its not when warm or anything its ALWAYS there on a full right lock and definatly coming from left hand front wheel area

Hi. I don't think it is a diff problem I have an 05 sti (wide track) and in the mornings I reverse off my drive on full right lock and the same thing happens to me. Like a cv knock? Although it may even be the cv but I don't think it's anything to worry about. Just check you gearbox and diff levels. It may be the diff winding or unwinding. Someone will explain more as I don't know much about them myself. Also I would assume if the diff was going it would be there all the time. Also going in a straight line as the diff is always turning no matter what way you are turning? I hope that made sense lol as I say I am no expert but I don't THINK it's anything to worry about. Although if you do find a problem or solution please could you let me know.
Many thanks

i was only certain it was gearbox related after it started whining , even the mechanics at falkland performance centre werent sure what it was , but once the box started making more noise it was an easy decision to get it checked out.
not sure if he comes on here anymore but david at api engines gave me some advice at the time and confirmed the price i paid to have it fixed was right

When your reversing make sure you set the dccd wheel to fully rear, or give the handbrake 1 click to stop the thud / banging your hearing.

Hi infected by sti lol so what is the noise that we are hearing? A clunk or knock? Is it normal or just something to do with the dccd. Is there a guide to the dccd as the impreza handbook is very vague lol cheers. Sorry to hijack the thread op

Do you have coilovers? I had the front diff diagnosed as the problem and had a new one fitted at great expense. New driveshafts went through the process of elimination on all the arbs droplinks etc. turned out it was the spring seats at the top of the spring, the bearings had collapsed. Two new parts for each side around £80!

When it's warm go to a car park put the car in full lock and turn slowly in first gear in a circle both directions.
If it makes no noises and clonks don't worry anymore.
Dont ask for a diagnoses over the Internet as non problems always turn into bottom end knock or box rebuilds.

This is exactly the same on my 2003 blobeye sti. I've been scratching my head for a few weeks now. I've changed drop links, 2nd hand driveshaft and different suspension (sti struts with prodrive springs) not because of the noise but didn't change it. It does sound like what aron1978 says. Think that will be my next option. Had a mechanic look at it and he didnt hear it.
