go to the boot lock, and check the lock out catch lever is either up or down (cant remember) this confuddeled me for ages on my first classic. Must of knocked it with the shopping
Thanks I have tried that but didn't make a difference, i have no boot lock either as that was removed so I have to open it from the inside which makes it a little more difficult, the parts look like thy are all working ok tried the leaver and when the boots open and looks like it is doing its job as moving freely
do you have a non genuine sti spoiler as they are heavy and sometimes prevent the boot opening properly and the springs are also not strong enough on wrxs
id take a guess that the cable has come out of the lever in the cabin.
sometimes it still pulls enough to appear working but not far enough to actually pull the lock.
im pretty sure the outer cable comes out some how so its not pulling all the way.
take the mechanism apart and id say its the problem.
ive never felt the need to use the boot lock either in 6 plus years of owning the car but hey ho.
I highly doubt you 'never' once used the boot lock. Thats quite a retarded thing to claim, but if you makes you feel better about being owned Danny boy its ok

I happened to buy mine without a boot lock however I believe it looks good. All the new car designers decide to hide the lock these days anyway. That's beside the point though I need help in fixing this problem lol

Have you checked the cable like fatty said?
If its snapped, it will be a loose pull, if the ball end has come out of the socket, it will be a loose pull. Check on the catch end as well.
There is enough tension so that the ball bit pulls back the metal to 12 o'clock position and the lock only needs a slight bit of pressure to open and when open it looks like it's doing enough and had someone put their finger on t whilst I pulled the leaver an seems all ok that end. Tried the lock up and down makes no difference to the leaver when I'm trying both ways do not work

its the outer cable not located properly in the pull part. its pulling the outer cable too rather than the outer cable staying put and just pulling the inner cable and opening the lock.
