At what point does enough become enough?
Hey guys,
Struggling with subaru ownership right now....
At what point do you guys running big power call it a day?
It seems like the car is a never ending money pit (Iexpected all this when I bought it) I know the running costs are high, but at what point does it become unjustifiable to spend 0000's on an 18yr/o chav wagon?
I got the car for good money, and have had good times in it. The stroker engine has let go, its had a good run 30+k miles at 500+hp. It wasnt due to any issue from the building mapping or anything else. It is a manufacturing defect with the pistons.
Now obviously this is an aging car. to rectify it and make it how I want it I need to -
1) New CDB Stroker engine £5+k
2) Widetrack conversion -£2k
3) ABW Arch conversion and rust remediation £???? got to be 2k+
4) New Tein Suspension/Rebuild - £1k min
5) Instead of abw + rust repair type r shell - 3-5k
6) 6 speed refresh while engine is out - 1k
So in basic terms we are working on a 10-11k budget, for an 18yr/o subaru.... this will be by no means the last problem had with the car thats for sure. So at what point do people think its enough is enough?
It is affordable, but with that kind of money so is a Focus RS and an Insignia VXR and I can race my Glanza this year.
Strip and sell, or keep?

Strip And sell in my opinion.
If you even have to ask that question then your heart is no longer in it.
Mine makes me like a little kid and is something ultimately special everytime I sit in it.
I have put stupid money in mine (always have done with my cars) and will probably do sub 1000 miles in it but smile per mile makes it all worth it too me.

It's a difficult one, I've just sold mine...it needed a bit spending on it but not a massive amount but I got offered another car which was better and had a way better setup and collection of parts, I needed to find the difference to pay for it but this is less than it would have cost me to get mine to a similar spec, sit down and do the maths...the numbers will tell you what to do

Personally , when you have a good strong built engine , taking mileage into consideration shouldn't be a given .. A strip down clean , refresh & replace should be taking into consideration around the 20-30k anyway .. Remember it was built not bought.... U have been unlucky as its let a component go , is that neglect ? Or taking for granted ... As for the rest of your issues as above , only you can decide .
I'm not having a dig m8 , it's just my opinion .... £ money pit they surely are m8 in every way

Look at it this way. The other works you are looking to do, will refresh the car and make it new again.
You can buy a rust bucket ford thats not nearly as fun and you will be throwing the same sort of money at it in maybe 4-5 years.
But if you spend this money on YOUR car that you love, you know my might be spending this money on it again in 4-5 years. But you will have a damn sight more fun than in something thats 200bhp deficient. Ironically, if a scooby comes up against you and blitzes you off the mark, you will regret buying that focus!
I would say devil you know rather than devil you dont
Fix the car, give her a new lease of life!!

I was expecting a refresh, not a new build.
The maths is telling me that you have to be ****ing mad to put that much money into something like this....
YET The smile on my face when the right boot comes into play and the magic of this pushing you forward happens, and thats just an every day run to the shop, on the meth map we dont know what happens other than increase my grin -

As long as the car still puts a smile on your face and brings some joy to you then it's all worthwhile IMO, I've forked out for two 2.1's and a 2.35 in the last four years.

Personally I think you gone to far with it as it is, would be a shame to stop now, at least get some enjoyment out of it, to many owners chuck to much money at a car and then end up stripping/selling it. If you lost the love for it, put it away and see if you feel the same about it in 6 months time when the weather picks up.

I doubt I'll ever loose the love for the car....
Its not even loosing the love for it. As I love the car to bits. There is no way to describe 500+hp in a stripped and caged classic. And nothing will come close to it.
It is the sensibility of pouring so much money into a 18yr old car that is the issue.

Ive been in a 500bhp classic a few times, and you can never get bored of that feeling But I can see where your coming from pouring money into a old car, I felt the same way spending money on a 7 year old Impreza.
Could you enjoy with slightly less power?? Maybe run it at a safe 450bhp!!

Old scoobs are great fun espically at the levels your running, but seriously for the kind of cash you looking at for what you want, why not buy an escort cosworth or somthing similar.
Wont be as fast by a long shot, but those cars are holding value very well whist old scobbys arent right now
If its a track car your after i wouldnt go the escos route, its more of an investment and grin thing

Thats it on low boost, on high boost im expecting 560+ on the meth map.
This was the last meth map we had done before the new turbo -
This is what I was thinking, some comfort and reliability wouldnt be such a bad thing.... Because that 11k wouldnt be the end of it, it would only ever carry on going up....
This is the point of which i either keep it for life and spend what ever it needs, or get rid and get something sensible, a'la Insignia VXR, focus RS, golf R etc....

Well, I bought my Type R for £7200 ended up spending another £9k on it over 4yrs a large portion of that in the 1st year, then it let go again and I rebuilt it myself. I got sick of throwing money at it and it didn't make sense as I only put 10k miles on it in that time as I had company cars.
I said enough was enough and sold a fair chunk of the parts, and bought my current Blob Wagon, In the end I couldn't bring myself to part with it for the pittance I'd get for the almost complete shell as I discovered the front valance was bent on one corner behind the bumper, nothing major but enough to de-value the shell, so I kept the running gear as well.
Over the last couple of years I have been collecting some of the parts I need as and when they pop up very cheap, all I need now is a bonnet and to build my engine, which i'm putting parts together for now, again as and when they pop up cheapy cheap, also done a few bits and bobs on the blob along the way to get my scooby fix.
I'm glad I never got rid as it will be my project / toy to play with in the next few years until I get it mint, I won't be going to your level only 350ish (famous last words) but the engine will be built to take 600 the prices and rarity are both increasing too.
I think you should drive your Glanza, source a Type R or RA shell and put your parts, time and money into that because they are a little more special and will be worth more in the long run, as by the time you've thrown the money needed at your shell you could of just bought one.
I think Scooby Clinic have a wide body kitted Type R shell for sale.

That has crossed my mind more than once lol
It definitely does that, this is my conundrum, what on this planet can compare that I wont get bored of?
Do they now? Got a link?
I want a type R shell, no doubt about it, but by doing the type r shell now that means no racing this year
And I know exactly how you feel, its been never ending, and is likely to never end.... It is getting to that point where it is easier to start all over again rather than keep patching it up as it goes wrong
