Blob eye '04 STi tapping/clicking...
Hi,
Just bought my '04 impreza WRX STi and I've noticed that there is a tapping/ticking sound on idle but it's irregular. It will sound momentarily then disappear before reappearing etc. Engine temp has no effect on the sound and it's just been serviced top to bottom.
The dealer suggested that it could be a noisy EGR valve or boost solenoid. Just wondering if this is a common issue on these or whether it could be something more serious?
Thanks in advance.
Vicky.

Well they took a spark plug out and filled it with 5ltrs so I'm assuming all is well.
Yes the oil change was done correctly besides it was doing it pre and post oil change.
I'll take a look at the boost solenoid in that case and if not move on to the injectors. Start small and all that.
Thanks for the advice!

Could be a bit of piston slap?
Get yourself a long screwdriver or stethoscope if you can happen to put your hand on one and have a listen round the engine bay and see if you can determine where is coming from, try it on the boost solenoid too, youll hear it ticking through the screwdriver if it is that.
You can clean it with some brake and carb cleaner.

I doubt it's piston slap unless a built motor, only new age cars to have forged Pistons from factory were V7 Possibly the Wrx NB and some jdm Hawkeye limited cars the rest had hypereutectic inc your Blobeye.
Timing belt idler issue maybe ? you need to narrow the area of the noise or take it to a specialist
