I stripped out the rear of my hawkeye to remove some unnecessary cables the previous owner left in my car- driving it was just like a rally car, lots more exhaust noise too! Upon doing this i discovered a noise that can be heard around 2.6-2.8k just as slight boost is building, it last for about 2-3 seconds and goes. It sounds metallic. I've since put the car back together and can still hear it but not as much. I'm curious as to what it could be, exhaust vibrating on something? Strange how it only happens around a certain Rev range though..

 

Loose heat shield on turbo or above exhaust?

 

The turbo heat shield has been removed so I'll investigate the exhaust one. Do you mean above the backbox or is there one on the downpipe too?

 

Could be any of them really. They rust through where the fixings are

 

I took a look at the exhaust over the weekend and the resonator pipe's hangar has rusted free from the pipe itself, so whether that's the guilty party I'm not sure. I tried fixing a jubilee clip to it to see if it would stop the rattle but its still there.

So I figure now is a good time to get a straight through res pipe! Can anyone recommend one? £140 from Cobra seem's a bit much for what is essentially a metal pipe. Also tempted to get a second decat too..
