Default A little newbie advice

Hi
I've got a 1999 Turbo 2000 that I've had since new. It's got 70,000 miles on the clock and has never had anything done to it (never even had any parts replaced beyond normal service things and brakes). Last week I took it out for one of its rare journeys (it does about 1000 miles a year now) and there was smoke coming out of the turbo. My mechanic said the turbo is about to give out so I've left it at the garage with him.
When I found that a standard replacement cost more than the car was worth I had a look around and found a turbo that says it is bolt on and so have ordered it as a direct replacement. It's made by Kanagawa - link at the bottom (now having read a little in this forum I'm gathering that was a bad choice!).
My question is this... Once it is 'bolted on', do I need to do anything else. I understand that mechanically it'll just fit in but surely something would need configuring to allow for a different type of turbo.
Please excuse the non technical terminology, as you can tell, I don't do this often

You should have a td04 turbo on your car so that's the wrong turbo if you're keeping it standard. I think the td06 is far too big for standard set up but I'm sure someone can confirm this. Different turbo=remap

as above - your car would have a TD04 as standard, that turbo will max your injectors out so hard. Check with the breakers on here you should be able to pick up a TD04 from a hawk/blob/bug in decent condition for much less money.

td06 is totally wrong for your car, its more suited to the 2.5 as there is more torque to push the turbo, it would be laggy on a 2ltr. there have been mixed results with the kinugawa turbos and there is a thread on here somewhere regarding them. also you would need to remap the car so some sort of aftermarket ecu or esl board will be required, also an injector change to make the most of the turbo as well. sell the turbo and buy a 2nd hand td04 from one of the breakers on site there are a few good ones. lots of people upgrade the td04 so theres a good chance of getting a good low mileage one.

Chinese ****e turbos! Anyway unless you replace it with a stock Turbo it will probably need a remap.

o bugger!
It specifically says on it that its a direct replacement for a TD04. This sounds like it is bad news
So I will try to get in touch with the seller and see what can be done but I think it's probably half way through its journey from the far east now.
Wish I'd seen this forum before I'd clicked the buy button

its a direct fit yes - as in physically you can bolt it into the car. The airflow it produces is much much higher though and enough to damage your engine in it's current setup.

Hopefully you can get a buyer for it if they won't take it back, TD04 should be easy picked up or rebuilt.

Thanks for all the advice...

I've been in contact with Kanagawa and they say that I should just refuse delivery and it'll make it's way back to them. Will cost me £60 delivery charge but sounds like it'll be worth it to take the hit.

So should I just be looking at the breaking section on this site for a TD04 or do people have recommendations?

yep try the breakers on site a few good ones mattyb etc. there are always td04,s on the go as most people upgrade them and they are normally relatively cheap. i have a td04 in a cupboard somewhere, i paid 30 quid for it lol. ask about shaft play from the buyer and get them to confirm there,s no play in the turbo bearing. there is forwards and backwards movement but should be no side to side movement (endfloat)

depends on budget tbh, a decent td04 will be easy to pick up cheap, but could get it upgraded while your at it

From the info I've read so far, if I change the turbo to anything different from what's come off, I'll need to change some other bits and get it remapped. After browsing round here for a couple of days I'm thinking I might well do that, but it also looks like I'll need to put some thought into it whereas at the moment I need to get the car out of the garage. So I think I'll go for the short-term direct replacement and then come back here to get some ideas on proper upgrades.
Really impressed with the community here (although not that surprised as I've spent 15 years of getting a wave from the Scooby driving the other way!)

very sensible bud. get the car rolling again then research where you would like to go with the car regarding power etc. it can get expensive so beware lol. things like brakes etc need upgrading as well when you up the power and a lot of people forget that.

Apologies for more questions but I think I've found a couple of candidate replacements. Would something like this slot in with no modification...

Also I found this which says it is brand new and it is only £170 quid. Is that too good to be true?

Both expensive if you ask me, just put a thread up in the wanted section, you should be able to pick a decent low ish miles one for between £40/ 60 they're pretty bullet proof turbo and don't let go very often, your's probably died due to lack of use, mine is on 114k and still fine.

Save your money mate you'll get one for next to nothing off here.

If you do upgrade the turbo then with your classic being 1999 it will not need an aftermarket ECU or daughterboard as your ECU is mappable.

.... by an ECUtek dealer - with ESL you can map it yourself live if you are so inclined.

I knew the post '98 classics were mappable but wasn't sure if you could use open source on them. ESL is a great option to have then
