It's not worth the hassle. New genuine panels from Subaru are about £380 each if you can get them, and that's only the start of your problems. The strut towers and inner arch will be worse than the quarters. The quarters are the last bit to show the rot, I know from experience. So unless it's a really special classic and you've got deep pockets, I wouldn't bother with it.

Sadly the above is very true. The outer panel is just cosmetic. Once you cut it off you find all the structure inside which cannot be replace without basically rebuilding the chassis with new panels is rotten too. It's due to poor panel overlap design and lack or corrosion protection on seams.
As for price I would expect to pay at least £800 to have both sides fitted and blended. Probably more to be honest.
So as above, unless you have deep pockets. Don't bother.

Thanks guys.
What about fresh imports from Japan? Apparently they don't use salt in Japan but I am wondering whether it is only the salt causing the problem or they rust in general regardless.
This is the car I saw, how much do people think it is worth?
It has 0 service history, the owner says he has been servicing it at majormotorsport and the cambelt needs doing.
Both arches are rusted quite badly, the rear creaks slightly (shocks are still original but the damping seems OK - the top mounts could do with replacing though as they have started to crack). Basically the car needs money poured into it to refresh it and I am not sure I am prepared to do this unless it is VERY cheap.

I think the rear arches themselfs worked out at £30 each, very good price, then when i asked about postage it they said they have a company that would pack and deliver them, import duty would be pre paid, but that worked out £150 a panel
Insane delivery money, weird thing is why don't UK companies cash in? As you can buy most other panels off them, bonnets, wings etc

Im going down that route and eventually found a new bodyshop who is prepared to take on the job
New subaru wings are £150 each and the bodyshop can get a copy Wing for about £37 which I thought was good value
But his supplier can only get drivers side ones at te moment
I followers this lead up on eBay supplier and they are waiting for passenger wings in at the end of April at £49 Each
Has anyone got any leads for Subaru wings cheaper and both sides on stock ?
Has anyone actually had the rear arches replaced by cutting the front wings up
Or is it an Scoobnet rumour that has evolved over the years
As I'd don't want to but wings and find they dont work

Just a note about non genuine front wings. They are fine to chop up and use on the rear as rust repairs. But all the non genuine Impreza wings I have tried on the front have lined up so poorly I had to dremel the holes out. Eventually got them fitted but the panel gaps are **** and the lights don't fit properly, doors catch on edges etc. Seriously don't consider using them for their intended purpose as they are crap.

i had the drivers side done, using a new 1/4 from subaru £120quid, it was for the wagon but the dogleg and lower part are the same as saloon, the passengers side was done using a drivers side wing, it works for about 3-4inchs of the arch curve plus about 6-8inchs of the straight part that rusts out
That's the info I was looking for as it's been talked about for years and not many people have actually gone through the procedure itself
I been quoted £300 per side which I'm more then happy about and any other cutting out and replacing around by turret if necessary Im happy to pay for as I want the job done right

Is that 300 per side from a body shop that has never dealt with rusty impreza arches before? It sounds like a very good price but I would have thought only covers what they can see. The real issue is behind that. I would double check with them before they cut the outer panel then tell you either they can't do it or it will cost twice as much...

For anybody thinking that its just a bit of surface rust that can be rubbed down and painted for a few £100. Take a look at this...

I personally would not be happy fitting a new outer wing over a load of rusty inner panels. Some of that rust is also very near to the strut and if it could be seen properly by an MOT tester may even fail.
