Starting a car that's been stood for ten months?

Default Starting a car that's been stood for ten months?

Apart from removing the crank position sensor connector and turning it over to circulate oil, what else should I do?

It's been SORN since last June, and the battery has been flat this year, so a new one is on order, plus a conditioner.

Hoping to get it started so as to run to a bodywork place for the rear sills, then it can be MoT'd for this year.

hand crank it to make sure if turns ok for a couple of turns, check the timing marks to make sure timing still ok before you try and turn it over. 10 months isn't that long, but worth the 20 mins to check just in case

May be worth taking spark plugs out and squirting a tiny bit of oil in the bores. Then as above hand crank to ensure it turns freely.

Do want manufacturers do. Charge the battery, fire it up and drive it.

If you look at the timescales of mass produced cars they may be on a boat for 6 weeks or more from Japan, then on the docks/distribution depot for a few weeks, at the dealers for a week for PDI etc and then gunned and gone.

My car was stood for 10 months while i was in Canada working.

All I did was re connect the battery check the oil then fired it up.
Sounded sweet no tapping or anything.

what is likely to have happened to the timing in the 10 months the car has not run?

It shouldn't have done, but belt is rubber so perishes over time, plus the tensioner is hydraulic and the seal tends to be the first thing that goes. 10 months isn't a long time, but considering it take about 5 mins to check timing is still good and belt is still got proper tension on it then not a massive chore.

If tensioner has gone, belt has moved a tooth and its started worst case its rebuild time.

So worst case you don't check and cost you an engine, you do check and it costs you 5 mins.

You takes your choice and pay the price, 5 mins or £4000.

it makes more sense now what you are trying to say,although if the OP had said he parked the car up when it needed a belt it would be a different matter, but jumping in and pulling timing covers off to see if the marks still line up and the tensioner is or isn't gone is a bit OTT.

You need to gently rub the engine to make sure it is ok, give it a little kiss and whisper into the air filter "please start you beauty". When you turn the key, close your eyes and give the steering wheel a little tap .
