Much nicer in what sense?
Interior looks a nicer place, can't comment on drive, but saying that if you spent an extra 10k on the Impreza i'm sure that would bridge the gap

^ This! well said, i'm lucky in that i can do a direct comparison between the two, as my oldman has the audi which i've borrowed a few times and i have the new STi, yes the audi is a nicer place to sit in as you would expect for something costing a lot more (even before you start adding any options), but my god is it dull to drive, whereas the STi is a hoot everytime i get into it, as simple as that really.

Do you really have nothing better to do with your day than post the same old dribble over a Subaru forum!
I mean come on you don't even own a Subaru because your sign wouldn't fit in the back.
The sun is shining go put on your pink shorts and get your roof down and go out and enjoy it!!! Then tonight why don't you sit down with your glass of wine and sign up to a few Audi and merc forums

I think the journos need a bit of a history lesson regards Audi, they were doing 4wd saloons 30yrs ago so it's not as though they have copied Subarus formula.
Apart from that I don't really think there's any comparison between the two beyond 4wd, one is the 4wd version of a German luxo barge and the other is a niche market 4wd rally inspired performance car, I'm not sure who is copying the other with Subarus moving closer to the luxury and toys department.
Personally I think they should stick to what they have always done and give us a cheap 4wd giant slayer that's the quickest thing out there for the money and leave the fancy pants stuff to the krauts.
I and I'm sure many others would be more inclined to buy one if it was reliable and had 400+ bhp on tap, I'd much sooner they put the money into it going like the clappers than being a nice place to be, who cares how nice it is when your in front never bothered any one with the first incarnation so why would it now.

Been here a lot longer than you and like so many others will be here long after you have gone!
Subaru stopped making great cars in 2006! It's only my opinion, but I am allowed it you know?
Anyways haven't you got a 2003 or something so what's your problem?

have you driven any of the newer ones?

Yep, they weren't too bad to drive, but they seem to have lost focus to me!
Looks wise they are pretty awful.
Interior, comfort etc. I think they have drifted too far behind their competitors and the performance gap is no longer there to make up for it..

apart from against the audi,,,,,,

Honestly even the performance variants in the Audis, which are quick no doubt are soul less to drive. You feel totally disconnected from the whole experience which kind of defeats the objective of the whole thing all in my honest opinion

Its not all about raw speed, whats the point in driving a fast car if the experience is so boring you fall asleep at the wheel. I'd rather have a much more involving car than a quicker 0-60 time. Plus if you throw the price difference between the two at the subaru it'll be quicker aswell.

Having lived next to the Audi plant and the main BMW plant in Germany for years and therefore knowing the people that build these things as well as having put high power classics against Germanys finest on autobahns and backroads. Conversely I have spend hours way north of 100mph in MTMs and AMGs ect and have compared them to 500hp imprezas ect.
These threads always slightly amuse me. You can not really compare these cars in the UK as as a rule you can not take them to their limits.
70mph, Pot holes and being filmed by 20 different types of camera makes it all totally academic.
(Audi are a brilliant marketing organisation selling the concept of engineering run by accountants. They are very good at what they do.....making alot of money)

I liked the S3 300ps sportback I had for 6 months and 10,000m as a company car.
Planted, chuckable, weighty steering, total grip, very little inertia in the body, deceptively fast, plus all the usual boring Audi stuff (good interior materials, economical considering how fast it was).
I get why people like the rawness and connection you have with Imprezas (I love my classic) but I really don't get statements about the latest S3 being 100% dull or worse.

Dull because its disconnected from the driving inputs you make, or rather its so good at doing things you would do normally electronically it takes away that feel you get from a more focused machine.

That's a strange given the new wrx sti is no more analogue than the equivalent audi/vw.

i guess i'm basing it on a slightly unfair advantage as mine is mapped for more bhp n torques than the stock audi.
