There have been quite a few threads where alloy spokes have cracked after powder coating.

Seems a very grey area tho i am no expert. But people say yes people say no. Imo if its true why arent people stopped from doing it due to safety reasons.

It's got nothing to do with the powder
It's baking in the oven
That's why bearings seals grom's etc are to be removed .
I use a friend who had been in the game years & yes he has everything on an industrial level , so from prep to paint to oven it's 100% flawless ..
On those words I would assume items that have failed or blistered , whatever - would be down to the business you choose to do the work...

Mine got powder coated. Really like the quality. Mine cost 65 quid plus vat each. All painted both sides. Looks the nuts.

If the wheels are cracking then someone is not doing it correctly.
Powdercoating is perfectly safe. Just use a decent place not backstreet billy.

If being on bake in a paint booth was damaging to alloys do you not think professional bodyshops who turn out 10-20 cars a day would have the same problem?

Dont worry about it dude.
If you are worried then take them to a bodyshop for them to be hand painted, but to be honest the better option is to have them powder coated. Harder wearing which is good for alloys.

Powder coating oem newage subaru wheels should be avoided, they are inherently weak and prone to hairline fracture, powder coating them is a bad move...

Powder coated more wheels than I can remember now (prob over 50 sets) from after market ones to subaru ones and none have failed yet but I refuse to do any that are cracked to start with

I get them done for £80 for a set of 4

I agree, surely that price won't include cleaning, sanding and prepping?

One of my volk CE28s cracked on one of the spokes and these are one of the strongest wheels out there,I can only think they were weakened by powdercoating

EFA

I've had many wheels powder coated over the years without issue. The chap who used to do mine has coated literally hundreds of wheels without one problem.
It's not that powdercoating weakens the wheels, it's poor workmanship that does it. One of the main causes is getting them too hot once coated.

If only I'd have known before, glad the wheels came with the car because if I'd payed the massive premium these wheels go for I'd have been suicidal...still hurts though, bloody loved those wheels. CAS coatings in Bradford have had numerous failures that I know of as they bake the old paint off them then powdercoat. I just wouldn't get any of my future wheels powdercoated again regardless who does them

My pal did my whole set for £100. That included removing tyres, sand blasting the wheels, powder coating and then refitting tyres and balancing them.
Unfortunately he doesn't do it anymore though.

I've never heard of anyone baking the old paint off, every set ive had done were sand blasted first.

i had my wheels powder coated by city powder coaters Birmingham they did a fantastic job as some of the wheels were in a bad way, they charged £20.00 per wheel at the time (if the tyres were already removed), i used to use a1 wheels in Wolverhampton until they started adding a premium if the wheels were Subaru gold or anthracite, or any colour other than silver.

How can anyone make any money at £20 per wheel? Unless its just one guy doing it privately?
I dont think id trust a company only charging £20 a wheel !

i understand what you are saying but while waiting for centre my caps the amount of people turning up to pick up and drop off wheels was shocking they are obviously making money from the amount they turn over, my friend paid the best part of £100 per wheel from a1 wheels and wishes he used city powdercoaters, just because they are cheap dose not mean they are bad.

Over the years I have always had my wheels Powder coated and never had an issue (circa 4 sets) some ever with added diamond cut lips (for my Bmw at the time)

Only really come across painting wheels since I became a Subaru owner. As said if done properly from a reputable company then there should be no issue.
One I used in London (custom cars) did a cracking job on my old ones and if I was down south now would go straight to them.

Sadly I now need to find a good one in Leeds. Typically I paid about £200 a set for the refurb / colour change but they took wheels off put them back in and balanced etc.

I had an issue with a set of Mr2 alloys done by Cas coatings in that a week after getting them back and on a car 2 of the alloys developed hairline cracks. It was mentioned to me that they may have baked them at too high a temperature..
Needless to say I never went back however have heard of others using them and having similar problems but I know of a mate that has used them for wheels without any issues so god knows really..!!

I have used Clover Coating over in Thornton, Bradford for a few years now and never had an issue. Had various wheels done and been more than happy with the results and if you go regularly the prices are reasonable IMO (£100 for a set of 4 wheels)

However you have to give them just the rims so tyres / valves need to be removed prior to giving to them as they dont offer that facility.
