Why so slow 0-100?!
#1
Hi. I am new to this board but have searched previous posts but cannot find the answer to my question.....
I drive a 328 E46 BMW at the moment which I am trying to sell. I am going to buy a new/nearly new Impreza WRX or push the boat out and go for an STi....I'll see what the insurance company says!
Anyway, the 0-60 figure for the standard WRX is great, but the 0-100 time seems relatively slow....examples below:
0-60 0-100
Impreza WRX MY02: 5.7 16.9
Fiat coupe 20VT 6.0 14.5
Audi TT 225 coupe 6.1 15.8
Audi S3 210BHP 6.4 16.4
Alfa GTV V6 6.6 16.0
Scoda Octava RS 6.7 16.7
BMW 328 7.3 18.0
I know that these sort of figures are never quite accurate but the trend from all the sources I've found seems to be the same.
My BMW is 1.6s slower 0-60 but only 1.1s slower 0-100, so from 60-100 it is 0.5s quicker?! The Skoda RS is 1.2s quicker from 60-100!!
I'd be really miffed if a Skoda pulls up next to me on a dual-carriageway at 60mph and pulls away from me!
Why is this the case? I know the Scooby gets a help off the line by the AWD, but the Audi's also have this and haul back the seconds from 60-100. Do I need an STi to save face?!

The WRX is not quick in a straight line because of its weight, AWD and only 215 BHP. Buy an Evo or an old shape STi instead Flame suit donned.... or better still for straight line an M3

O to 60 is quick because of traction benefit of 4wd
Opinion is that the Octavia that did those times was running the chip from the 215/225 bhp VAG engine and not the 180 it should have had. Later tests have been around 7.5 and 18 seconds.
O to 100 is a power/torque to weight issue. MY01 WRX and later cars quite heavy, so poor power/torque to weight figures.
Pre 01 scoobs would crack 100 in around 14 to 15 seconds.
And yes, your BM is probably a little quicker 60 to 100.

Thanks for the comments guys.
So what's to be done about it then? I know it should be easier to drive the Scooby faster than my BM, but wouldn't like to go to a "slower" car in the 30-100 range.
I want a new model as I do a lot of motorway miles and need something reasonable refined - I test drove a MY02 and it was quite acceptable cruising at 90mph.
How much do I need to spend to get up to 14-15s 0-100? Am I better going for an STi (stupid question but I mean is it the best to spend an extra £4k on the car + higher insurance etc or do a few mods to a standard WRX?)?
Any other car suggestions....I would like AWD as I've had a few brown trouser moments in my BMW in the wet....

These figures are fairly meaningless in the real world. You need a BIG power/torque advantage to just cruise past a car with +-20Bhp.
These times are also the times recorded on the day and not by an ordinary joe soap driver, so in reality the times recorded by a normal driver will probably be between 0.3 and 1 second out.
If you have no mechanical sympathy for the car(any car) then you may be able to match/beat these times.
Try several models and see which one suits you best. For example an STI Type RA WILL be VERY quick to 100, but because of it's gearing will be a real pain on the motorway. The new model is much less raw both in ride quality and noise, so you may well find that the old model is too raw for you.
A new STI's 30-70 is about 4.3 seconds and they can be got(Euro import) for around the 23K mark.
In short try a few.

Id personally go for the WRX STI type UK, if your not into big body kits then the standard STi for 26k is a little better and with the performance pack due out (with an increase to around 310-320bhp and warrantied by Subaru UK for around 1700-2k) it will be a cheaper option for you.
Services may be a pain and these cars are best run on super unleaded or optimax to get the best performance (and believe it or not, economy) out of them.

For a start, the model <MY00 is faster to 100mph due to weight advantage
Re the Audi 4wd, I think thats part-time 4wd rather than full-time,therefore less losses (? someone please correct me)
I know what you're saying. I (MY99) have been left for dust by Fiat Coupes at >60mph speeds. Its a bit disappointing, but can't have everything all the time. (Unfortunately, I tend to find myself in straight line brawls rather than twisty ones).

Is was john.
Figner trouble.
Should be 4.7, which is still within reach of a P1's and Evo 7's time.
All depends on gear changes etc though, so again it comes down to the driver, conditions and how looney the driver wants to be..

http://www.jcsbanks.btinternet.co.uk/performance.pdf I edited them from elsewhere on the web, seem to be Autocar figures, accuracy is a bit suspect in places - like the 3+s diff 0-100 between a UK and an STi classic shape.
