Hi and welcome, the Hawkeyes are terrible, the 2.5 engine is prone to failures

Get a JDM hawk, they are 2.0 and near built proof engine.

Thanks for the replies guys - sorry yes I've read about the head gasket issues etc and that doesn't put me off, it was more about nightly bits if they have any? For example had a corsa VXR and they're renound for rusting where the rear bumper meets the body, or my previous car which was a Boxster 987.1 and the convertible roof overlaps the lip when closing
Does the hawk have anything like that?

Neither of those 2 ads mention new head gaskets.. As a bare minimum your looking at 2-2.5k for that..to get it forged to high level your looking at minimum 5k.. Of course cheaper if you do it yourself.. Those prices prices will let you run higher bhp.. Obviously you'll need turbo, injectors, fmic, etc etc to ACTUALLY run higher bhp..

The rear struts knock badly as well.

you might be lucky though....

Good luck

You might not be put off by head gasket or ring lands, but lots of people would be. I think you would have a much harder time selling, especially at strong 2.5 money like the links. I would be looking for a JDM STi of some variety for that kind of price, without the reliability issues. Or a UK wide track blob, which would be similar or cheaper. Forged 2.5 would be nice too but for the same price you could get something much nicer, into some of the more exotic JDM's.

Hi,
If you are going Hawkeye, get a WRX. They don't seem to have any of the problems to STI does. I upgraded mine years ago to 272 bhp...never looked back.

Yes there are issues with the 2.5 I agree, no getting away from that

But let’s be Clear, we only hear of the ones out there that have let go. And a big contributing factor in most cases is the hard life it has had, and its history etc

I have a Hawk STI with 93k on the clock and has no problems what so ever with the engine! Whether it had gasket issues in the past is unknown. Give the engine/oil/coolant/exhaust smoke a good inspection

When I collected mine I got a bit of a deal as it had a few problems with it, rusty exhaust centre pipe, knocking shocks and secondary air pump system problems.

Since I sorted them all out I have no issues at all with the car and goes like stink!

Mine is on an 06 plate so is in the lower tax bracket £240 for the year as opposed to the later models which are almost double that.

Check the shocks! As coil overs are £700 minimum and factor that in to the price. Alternatively this could be the rear anti-roll bar bushes which are sound £40 to replace, both are easy jobs but need checking.

Check the engine bay for the secondary air pump, if its been removed already bonus, and you will know the car has been mapped. If not be cautious as this could go at any time and is expensive to replace, cheaper to remove but requires a map to remove the warning lights.

I think, personally, the hawk looks a lot better than blobs, certainly more aggressive than the pre-wisecrack blobs.

I'm glad I choose a UK Hawk, its never fails to put a smile on my face!

I agree with s3ldm, you only ever hear bad news, I am sure there are hundreds/thousands of hawks terrorising twistys problem free!

I bought a Hawk 2.5 UK STi last year with 37k on the clock. Heard about all the issues with the 2.5's but that didn't put me off.

Still running standard internals, with a full decat and a remap running 340/390
Took it to the Nurburgring for a two day track day, drove the car hard all day for two days without any problems, done a few trackdays too without any issues...well apart from getting a black flag for being too loud at Donington.

Love the torque from the 2.5's makes a great road car.

12K miles since owning the car with no problems....for now.

Matt.
