In shock!

Just filled up with petrol.
331 miles out of a tank.
49.1 litres
Rough and ready calculation, but that's over 30mpg!!!!
I usually get around 200-230 out of the same. But that's town driving as opposed to constant speed motorway driving...

Katana,
I was running a constant 80MPH on the motorway in 5th, I was starting to think the fuel gauge was not working but kept on going until the fuel light came on. I then filled up and put in 48Ltrs and got the same 300 miles on the way back.

I went to Edinburgh yesterday at a constant 90-95 mph all the way and got 290 going and 305 on the way back, but thats cos Edinburgh is up at the top of the map and Liverpool is all downhill from up there(MY01).Nick Adams thinks i drive like Miss Daisy to get these figures

sillysi, thanks to my gear ratios, the only time I ever had good millage on my car is when I'm cruising at 60 mph. I remember driving up to Durham not long ago and I had to spend quite a bit on petrol just to get up there at 80 mph...

That is good going... I have had 320miles from a tank of about 50litres before but that was following my father-in-law in his diesel metro so we had to do 65-70mph...
Normally around 280 per tank but I do mainly motorway driving.
Have seen 200miles to a tank when I did less motorway driving though..

I have recently been to both Plymouth and Newcastle from London and I was astonished to get around 28 mpg, averaging 80 mph all the way. I have a UK MY00 with a PPP and everybody told me that the mpg would decrease dramatically! I have found the following:
mpg (standard MY00 [95RON]) = mpg (MY00 + PPP [Optimax])
I know Optimax is more expensive but there is no doubt that, in my car, Optimax DEFINITELY leads to better fuel economy!

Am i right in thinking that Optimax gives better MPG as its a higher octane and hence burns for longer, meaning that in any time period, less fuel is burnt than if you used 95/97 RON ??
Just to make you guys feel better I recently got an average MPG of 38.2 for a tankful (50 litres/11 gallons) which meant that i was brave enough to do 397 miles before I stopped to fill up in my 2.0 litre car (its a Clio by the way )
Seriously, on a run from Bracknell - Wakefield - Bracknell on 97RON petrol in my old MY01 WRX i got 330 miles on a tank and that was 60-80mph due to traffic.

Recently filled up with 41 litres of Optimax after 285 miles. I reckon that's around 30-31mpg (45 litres would be 10 gallons hence around 28mpg, add on 10% as 41 litres is about 10% less). It was mixed driving (single and dual carriageways) too.

This was on constant speed motorway driving (around 70-80 all the way, I wasn't in a hurry, particularly through northamptonshire!)
I am in shock, as said, because I normally get 200-230 miles out of a tank.
Might have a beer to celebrate, and find a pub with a telly

Druddle, I think you will find if you run on lower octain fuel the ECU will react to the onset of knock by retarding the ignition. This will reduce efficiency resulting in lower mpg. If that isn't enough it will richen the mixture - same result. If even that doen't work it will stop altogether. That will reduce consumption bigtime!

Chiark, you see that pedal on the right? you might want to try using that every now and again
My one tank of solid 56mph driving gave me 29mpg; 339miles from the tank a bit more than the normal 160-180 miles from full to red light (I was delighted to ever see 20mpg, never mind 30 )

chiark,
I have had almost the same results as you recently on a long run over 300 miles on 48Ltrs instead of the usual 220 miles for town driving. I allways run in on optimax what are you using?
