Default 1/4 mile tips

Hopefully running at Santa Pod on Sunday, what DCCD setting? Tyre pressures? Launch technique? Hopefully dry conditions in a Newage.

good tyres with low pressure for maximum grip

take as much weight out of the car, even run with 1/4 tank of fuel, make sure intercooler is cold and not heat soaked

Kill the clutch or bog down of the line, your choice.

Have fun too!

If you're new to it, don't try to race the car next to you until you have your technique sorted. You can sit at the green light for 10 seconds and it won't affect your 1/4 mile time, as that starts timing once you move.

Wheelspin is better than bogging, so keep those revs up release clutch and hang on.

Oh, and see you there..

I use the handbrake, hold revs from anywhere between 4000-6000rpm then release handbrake just before lights turn green and slip the clutch to stop wheelspin or bogging.

I tend to flirt with the rev limiter to make use of the long WRX ratios but in an STI you might be better staying more in the power-band but I'm not sure. TBH you have to launch hard in a Newy WRX or it will bog down due to the insanely long 1st gear, I imagine an STI is far easier to launch but has the difficulty of rapid changing.

Tyre pressure 35psi.

Get an auto box and launch control. You can then catch up on your emails at the start line.

try and get a couple of early runs in before it gets too busy, after 11am it can get very stop/start and there's a long time spent queing.

Does it cost money to go on the strip or just the entrance fee and anyone can run.
I used to go to bug jam there about 20 years ago.

Which reminds me of a recent thought - Heat soak v thinning oil

OK, you have a 300bhp Impreza and it's been driven til oil temps are very high - what would be the power the car was making?

it would be the air charge temps which would drop power, there was a calculation for each degree rise in A. C. temperature there was a corresponding drop in power, I can't remember what the figures were but something like 10% power loss for every 11-12 deg C rise in ACT.
At full pelt a turbo pushes out temps of 120-150c so unless the ACT's were being measured you can only guess at the efficiency of a heatsoaked intercooler

Any idea 💡 how much.
I've got a 12 and 15 year old that might enjoy the thrill of me pretending to race in my impreza wagon or is it helmets and drivers only?

It'd be interesting, I've been reading about the gains from low friction oil and hot oil and it would work for the gearbox too. Engine and Transmission losses wouldn't be as high. Just 10% would be 30bhp and probably 40lbft atw

I think I read most boxes give out when red hot on the WRX.

I've only ever done clutches at the pod which eventually did take it's toll on my 5 speed. At most I would only manage 5 or 6 runs, it really is how hard you drive it.

My tyres are set to 30 PSI all round, LC think its set at about 5400rpm, dump clutch, as soon as im away, i try not to hang onto 1st gear too long, then change up to 2nd gear as quickly as possible to give me a run.

Try not to hold onto your gears to the redline, you are actually losing power, depending on turbo, change up when you hit your maximum revs and bhp, this helps massively to keep the power on when going up the strip, too easy to redline the car and actually lose time due to power loss

RWYB is usually £25 for unlimited runs, passengers must be 17.

On the Sunday it will probably be £30 for 3/4 runs, you'd be lucky to do more than 2 though with the queue.

I usually do about four 4k launches then finish with a big 5-6k effort. My clutch stinks the car out from changing gear fast and not particularly from launching.
