Years ago (I was about 20) I bought a Mk1 Golf GTi from a dealer. 10 days later the engine blew whilst I was driving to work and left debris all over the road. Very scary.
I went back to the dealership to find they had gone.
They must have had a dozen or so cars there when I was there buying the car. When I went back the lot was empty and there was no business signs or anything.
Expensive lesson learnt - always do homework when buying from a dealer.

1. If its warm when you turn up with no good reason walk away. Start the car from cold
2. Go on a realy long drive, tell the seller you will put money in the tank. Give it a good thrashing. If they compalin or say stop ask yourself why.
3. Check everything oil service history etc and you cant go wrong
You can usually tell if somones trying to hide somthing from their attitude when you go to look at a car

Bought a VXR Nurburgring from Vauxhall, drove it 100 miles home, parked up. Came out the next morning, found a coolant leak. Took it straight to my local Vauxhall, turned out the gearbox and diff were also fooked.
Got a full refund.
Total ownership time - about 19 hours lol

The best way to have car, is to have it inspected by an independent specialist or the RAC Platinum service inspection is fantastic, the mechanics spend over three hours on the car checking everything. I was extremely impressed and will always get one especially when parting with thousands of pounds, and I am very qualified in mechanical terms anyway.
If you can afford 8K+ on a car, you can afford the RAC check for complete piece of mind, it also after said inspection means you can get an RAC warranty which are better priced than others out there.
Why anyone would think 'thrashing ' a car for twenty minutes is a good thing to do I have no idea. If I was a dealer I would never allow this even if the car is A1.

Who's going to let an idiot come round and thrash a car.
Inspection is the grown up sensible option for both parties

Well ive bought well over 20 cars in my lifetime never had a rac check. Never had any major problems. Never had anyone complain about my driving. As far as im aware a compresion / leak down test is not an easy job on an impreza anyway.

well whats the acceptable amount of ''thrashing'' you would give someones car (a subaru) if you were interested in buying it? has anyone ever tried thrashing a car you had for sale ( a subaru) on a test drive lol?

WRX owners purchase system
- Look on SIOC
- Go to a council estate to drive a bright green WRX with neons
- him and and the baseball capped owner go driving round the estate at 90mph having little sex wees at the dump valve noise
- The deal speak 'thats buzzin' that mate, proper fast, its got 300bhp'
- then £500 parts hands (as no log book available)
- New owner goes home and thinks its a Ferrari and faster than an STI (cause SIOC says so)
- Has a little fumble with himself in the drivers seat over his purchase
- Looks on ebay to buy replica STI parts
- Goes to bed dreaming of a 5" exhaust tailpipe.
The end. The WRX owner is born.

So you would go buy a car pansy about in rush hour traffic. Get on the motorway on the way back. Do a down shift from 4th to 3rd comming off the slip road and crunch. All because you diddnt give it a thrashing. Tell me how rac or you can test a high rpm shift crunch please Mr Einstein

The look on an STI owners face when his 350bhp STI gets left for dead at the lights by a lighter, faster, more fuel/transmission efficient WRX PPP.
STI owner telling himself all the way home ..."well he's lucky his gearbox didn't break." ..gets home and checks to see if he's avoided the spotted threads.

I've test driven just 2 out of the last 4 trader cars I've bought, I just feel if something breaks it'll be like new when I fix/mod/warranty it. Obviously if I was on the look out for an STI I'd test drive it as I ain't paying £2000+ for a big silly heavy power robbing box.
