...would you STILL want one, and why?

IMHO....
evo's are better built, handle better, less common, and easier to mod.
skylines are better looking (IMHO), better built, and getting more affordable by the day.

so whats the attraction, apart from a glorious engine sound?

Hi Spud long time no hear.I d'ont want to get into the Evo/Skyline vs Scooby debate as I love all turbo charged Jap exotica.Taking the Evo7 vs STi7 I d'ont think its fair to say the Evo is better built. The STi7 interior is now streets ahead of the Evo as is the general feel of the car. Also small things like the Evo having a Coca Cola tin for a petrol tank, needing a service as regularly as you need to shave, and shaking your fillings! Build quality in terms of major mechanicals for the new cars is yet to be determind.
D'ont misunderstand me though I love Evos and Skys and will probably own one at some time in my life.

I prefer the Scoob mainly on looks (the bonnet scoop) and engine note. There are very few cars that sound that good at that price. I also have to disagree about build quality - if anything the Evo is worse especially inside. This runs through the Mitsi range as my parents have owned the last 3 Spacewagons.

Evo's dont really have a low price alternative to the Turbo/WRX hence why a lot of people can afford them and then get into the Subaru mindset. Scoobs are also a lot more common so its easier to view several and decide on one you like. And then you have the Scoobynet community - reason enough on its own to buy a scoob

I personally dislike the Skylines looks until u hit v-spec models and ones that have been modded cosmetically. There are a few older models driving around Cambridge and without the label and distinctive rear lights I wouldnt even notice one whilst out driving.

If we all liked the same cars the world would be a very boring place.

Simon.

Yes they are more exclusive but that becuase they dont make as many as Subaru make. Even the EVO guys admitted on here some of them have looked for over 12 months to find a decent 2nd hand one as alot are thrash, bashed and crashed ones out there. Trouble is nobody buys them to go to the shops in and the depreciation on a new one is high. The same can be said for scoobs but because there are more about its easier to find a good clean low mileage one and are cheaper 2nd hand because there are more. So its swings and runabouts really. In standard tune in every day life there isnt much in it and my scoob sounds better and is easier to live IMHO. On a track them I am sure the E7 maybe quicker but so what . I went to look at an E7 and its wasnt worth the extra 10K it would have cost me to swap plus it didnt scream "BUY ME" when I saw it.

If you want a bog standard EU import WRX its over 10K cheaper than a new E7.

I dont think evo's are easier to mod there are a lot more mod options on the market for scoobs and cheaper than evo mods aswell.

Agreed, EVOs are safer and easier to mod to get to a reliable 400bhp but they aint cheap to mod.

Much better known on the rallying front perhaps? More street cred?Every time I go past a gang of schoolboys:

1) Every head turns &
2) One or more always says "Subaru Impreza", in that tone of voice that shows both awe and respect.

I have lost count of how many grown men have stopped me at petrol stations to get my peronal opinion on the car's well known characteristics.

In short Scoobies are icons in a way that, for now, Mit Evo's will never be. I'm not stirring it, just giving a view.

Put it this way, even if a Scooby was 100 bhp down on an Evo (not far off the truth between a standard WRX and an Evo RS)I would still buy one. Evo's just don't do it for me.

Same argument for Ferrari v Porche; Ferrari every time although no one in their right mind would deny that the Porker is a bl$$dy good car.

QED.

Scoob wins 5-2 on aggregate

If I was competing in a Rally i know which car I'd want, but as I use my car on the road the scoob wins hands down. If all you want is the best handling, fastest car on the street there's half a dozen cars will pi55 on a Scoob or an Evo....why not get in line for a Focus Cosworth? Answer it looks like a modded mum's car and it's still a ******* Ford!!!!

I like my SCoob.....

I love my scooby

But Evo's are becoming dangerously tempting atm since driving one.......a Skyline I would love to own

Difficult choice.

22B, Evo 6 Makky, Skyline GTR34...........if you made me choose one it would take me several test drives to decide.

Before I would have no hesitation with the 22B .......but now I would bring the others into careful consideration

Easy answer really, i`ve just bought my first scooby MY97 UK model, main dealer for £10k. For that money an EVO or decent skyline are way out of my price range. As far as i`m concerned my money couldn`t have got a quicker, more user friendly and reliable beast!
Now with £25k burning a hole in my back pocket my opinion might change!

scooby v evo argument will go on for ever.

imho it mainly comes down to bang for buck, and the assault on your visual senses.
there's not many cars out there that do it, but the impreza is one of them.

and that engine note helps. a modern day version of a g4 bda!

STi for the engine note alone - i,d go along with the previous comment about kids shouting " scooby " as you drive past, the kids know whats cool and whats not. Besides the only guys that seem to drive round here in EVO,s care more about the sound system than the rest of the car.

Well how impartial and unbiased these views are coming across as.....

As an Evo owner, the Scoob doesn't really do it for me the same as the Evo doesn't really do it for wacky.banana! Each to their own though, most people will always defend what they've got, it's just human nature.....

I bet just as many people, if not more, turn their heads though wacky.banana when my Yellow V goes past as opposed to your Scoob.....

Cheers.....

Hmm hard one this but after driving an Evo6, owning an M3 Evo, Two S3 Quattros and a scooby i'd definately say the scooby does it for me. There's nothing that comes close to the engine noise and feel of the car as it pulls you up the road. I work in a comprehensive school as a Network & Resource manager so i "know" the school kid factor which the car brings.

The first day i bought it i was about to leave for the day at 3:30 when, driving out slowly was forced to come to a hault as a few hundred kids surrounded the car with their chins on the floor. "gimmie a ride Sir", "OMG that ******* car is AWESOME", were just some of the things that were shouted at me. It was amazing, i just sat there with the engine beat drumming out for all to hear and i thought "now who feels the nuts".

Sometimes i think & worry about the car because of the amount of attention it grabs, having an S3 previously made me realise that stealth is the better option as there are as we all know loads of ppl that get jealous and take it one step further i.e damage to your car. It's already happend to my car and i'm getting someone arrested for it.

I have the RB5 version so my interior is lovely and theres nothing i would change about the car, at all!

I gues we all use our cars day to day rather than exlusively for track days and b-lane blats, and as much as I'd love and EVO7 I can't justify it when you have to fill up every three mins, EVO mags test car got through two sets of tyres in 8000 miles and the interior looks like it came out of a 1989 Nissan Bluebird. It's not 'real world' practical and neither is the Skyline - IMHO the Scoob just about falls on the right side in this world of rising fuel and insurance costs and cars getting nicked.

Cool

Speaking as an engineer, it has to be the scoob it has an inherently better chassis, with a lower CofG, the crankshaft of the all alloy engine points the right way thus stopping the engines rotational forces affecting the balance (see any big accident involving a 205 T16, RS200, 037 or Delta HF), and the driveline works superbly on plain old LSD's, without resorting to electronic trickery.
An Evo is a Halfordised rep-mobile with some flash electronic toys to remove the effect of having a boat anchor over the front wheels.
The only great Skyline is the R32, it was superbly concieved & engineered with one purpose, namely defeating the then all-conquering RS500 in international touring car racing. However it too relys on electronic aids to achieve what the Subaru does by mechanical means only.
As for looks, lets face it, stick any of them next to an RX-7 or a Supra, and they look like what they are F**king Ugly modified production saloons.

CrisPducks point is by far the most important.

The skyline as a car does not compare as it is a different size and class of car meant for touring not rallying.

The evo is a fairer comparison, and ultimately the impreza does have a better design and layout in that it is a low slow flat four with equal length driveshafts and a lightweighy aluminium engine with a longitudinal layout. ideal for a four wheel drive.

The lancer was conceived as a two wheel drive saloon, hence its transverse steel straight four, but was converted for four wheel drive. As such, its inherent handling is not as good as it relies on technology such as active yaw control to improve its handling.

It doesnt have any more mechanical grip than the impreza that I am aware of, and apparently its front end bite is largely attributed to its front LSD, which can be retro fitted to any impreza.

As a design package, the impreza is the engineers choice. Not to mention the fact that it is 1-200kg lighter with the same power.

Regardless of this, I still prefer the evo. I have lost the engine note in my impreza anyway thanks to a tubular exhaust manifold.

and one last point though. dont believe ofr a second that it is cheap to get a reliable 400bhp from an evo, because that is bollocks.

ask mark shead how much work he has don in order to achieve a true 400bhp in his evo.

Scoobs - Owners listen to Boy Bands, and drive slowly past horses.

Evo owners - Anti-establishment, Heavy Metal listeners who turn horses into glue.

lol freudian slip of mine big time!

well spotted, and thankyou for reading so meticulously!

I thought horses were meant to be glue? is there another purpose for them? and I like metal!!!!

oh no, could I be an evo driver trapped in an impreza drivers body body?

(probably more like an evo driver trapped in two impreza drivers' bodies)

Coming home on the M25 anti clockwise from j10 to j21, the concrete "walls" seperating East and West carriageways make perfect amplifiers for my full scoobysport!

Would i have a scooby without the engine note? Thats a tough one. Theres loads of "Kudos" with the genaral public with the car, after its rally successes you get gawps, stares and reaction by the bucket load even at low speeds from pedestrians and motorists alike.

The main reason i got the P1 i have now (as it is nearly the same price as the evo) rather than an evo is i am used to them. Ive had 3 imprezas, the first one being £14000. I wouldnt have been able to buy a good evo for that when i was looking, and indeed i was originally going to get an escort cossie, but was put off by thrashed high mileage chipped up to the eyeballs cars that cost no less than £18000. As it was said before entry level wise imprezas are much cheaper second hand and i guess people tend to have more brand loyalty with the subaru badge.

So, i guess the engine note is important to me, but even if it didnt have it i guess id still have an impreza, after all i didnt know anything at all about the "special" engine note at all when i decided i wanted a scooby.

Thumbs up

Shaun,

Like the comment about your yellow one turning heads as against my blue. Can't argue on that one. Glad you enjoy your car, as I do mine.

The point I was trying to make, which I know you got, was that owning an Impreza, like a Ferrari (for me anyway) is something from the heart.

Its not just about BHP & grip. Its about its history, its kudos, its smile factor, the awe with which anyone who knows anything about cars views this car, its solidity, the so different engineering (boxer engine et al), the sense of history (lost count of the rally wins and the JD Power plaudits)etc, etc, etc(Ferrari owners does this ring a bell?).

Every time I jump in the car and start the engine, I can't help a slow grin lighting up my face. No other car has given me that feel good factor.

Like I said, the Scooby does it for me, engine note or not.
Enjoy....

Cheers chap.

WB
