Hi guys been to look at a 59 plate hatch sti tonight on a cat d but decent price. The guy has a bill for an engine but looks vague, can anyone explain it to me. Surely they haven't just put original week parts back in.

No mention of forged pistons or headmasters and uprated studs.
Just a standard rebuild and comes along with the associated chocolate 2.5 issues.....

Surely they have changed gaskets, I'm gonna ring garage in morning and hopefully get more info, what questions do I need to ask?
It's just had 4 new Bridgestone tyres, got £1500 vx coil overs, newly refurbished alloys and to be fair is in great condition, better than some not cat'ed cars. Surley worth 9k all day

The engine build means nothing really as its just back to standard and by the price of the build it will be cheaper parts so basically they have built a weak engine even weaker, if it had been forged then id say yes decent price but that be a gamble, you will end up with a cat d and another failed engine, it be worth nothing then, far too much of a gamble

I've messaged the builder and he says he just supplied a stock engine. What other questions do I need to ask?
Suppose with any of these there a gamble on it blowing. £15k or £9k cat d

I can always see this been a problem with me purchasing one of these hatch sti's. Got talked out of one around 12 months since after owning 10+ Impreza's over 15 years without 1 single issue. Now or never in thinking, can these engines not be upgraded before they let go for less money?

yes you can get the pistons and headgaskets swapped out before they fail, it will cost a little less but still expect to lose a few grand in doing it. 9k seems a bit steep in my opinion if it's been repaired before (how bad was the damage?) and will need another 3k or more on a proper build before you can drive it without the fear.

Just spoken to the guy who built engine, all seals and gaskets done. He does specialise in impreza's and has been doing them for years. It was built stock as that's what customer wanted.

So is the advice to stay clear of this one or any none forged 2.5sti? As I've traced previous owners regarding this car and the person who sent it for engine build.

Simply put yes, 2.5s have a nasty habbit of dropping ring lands and headgaskets. I suspect engine build was done on the cheap rather than any thought of longevity

At the end of the day it's always going to be a CAT D.
With or without a proper engine build.
So unless someone is desperate to buy a Hatch 330s cus it's in their cheaper price range. It's not going to be a good seller. Plus insurance issue too.
Id save a few grand more and buy a better non right off car.

Diffulcult to sell in the future especially as the car gets older and it's 7 years old now
2.5 engine you will need to have 3-5 k spare in the bank when the engine goes pop again
And it will
Listern to the good advice here and walk away
There isn't many STi for sale as people who have them have had to spend thousands on them replaceing engines so need To keep them to get their moneys worth
