Default Safe BHP on classic 2000?

Evening all, tried searching but no luck..

Question is, on a standard UK turbo 2000 (T reg 1999) classic engine what is a safe bhp on these internals? and gearbox?

If it's the standard engine I'd say stay as is. It's 17 years old. I ran 350 with an STi bottom end but had head gasket issues.

i think 280 was about the safe limit, i had it for a while and i found that the gearbox was already taking quite a beating.

280-300.

But remember it's an old engine.

Mine destroyed it's bottom end after heat-soaking at around 300. Expensive.....

My 23 year old engine and gearbox have been quite happy at 325/302 since 2006.

Ok I've probably done about 10k miles in that time, but still

My gearbox went at 280ftlb, but was giving it death on the isle of man hahaha

Car then ran at 340bhp for about 5 years and 30k with a ppg gearbox and no engine issues till i sold it on and new owner wrote it off.

Ran 330/320 for 20k miles without issue.
Simply uprated turbo, fitted FMIC, decent exhaust and got it mapped

Every engine with the same mods will produce different numbers, long as it is well looked after with oil changes etc, don't worry so much about bhp numbers but the way it drives and performs

Please dont refer to uk classics as versions, only the STI's were versions, if you need to refer to engines pre 2001 then its phase 1 93-96 phase 1.5 97-98 and phase 2 99-00, this goes for all classic engines, none STI's are referred to as MY or model year

And if the above sounds like pedantry...trust me, it's not.

It allows us to know what engine is in your car, unless you have been specific at the outset, or had engine changes.

Safe with a standard 215bhp (or 237bhp). Anything over 300bhp / 280lb/ft has got to limit the life as it wasn't designed for it, but it could last for ages. Or not.

Useful to know. I'm new to Impreza's and been trying to figure out the naming conventions.

Edit: Just realised this is an old thread, how did I even end up here?

I think it all depends on how well you maintain your engine or it has been maintained previously. You see people blowing up engines that are low mileage and others running high power figures on engines with high miles! I viewed a lot of imprezas before I got mine and one was under 70k miles but ran like crap as it had bolt on bits...said it had been mapped but I could tell it had just been abused and was an engine catastrophe waiting to happen!
From experience of a S14a engine I ended up having a second rebuild due to the radiator giving up! Sometimes it ain't the engine that can fail you....its other shall we say weaker areas that can be costly! I would say make sure your bits are quality not cheap stuff...Get it fitted and mapped by a trustworthy place and if they know there stuff they will be able to see if pushing your car further will cause any damage and will abort if necessary !
