From: 5 beats 4 - RS3 Rulez!!!
Due to unforseen circumstances, I had to part company with my Escort Cossie.....BUT now circumstances have changed, I am able to look at what is around.
I thought long and hard, and did think about a 3dr Cossie, but after much deliberation (and possibly finding the one I want) I have decided to return to the Subaru fold!!!!
I have seen and test driven a nice standard silver Version 4 Type R, and was wondering what sort of things I should be looking for?? I have been out of the Scooby car scene for quite sometime, and my memory has gone blank. From a basic mechanical point of view, the car seems fine, but I would appreciate any specific points to look for (mechancial/electrical/build etc etc).
One issue that concerns me is the issue of piston slap.
Perhaps this should belong in drivetrain (someone move it, and they are dead ), but it's meant to cover all items.
I have read a previous post, but answers from JF were pointed towards the version 5 model.....not sure if that was relevant.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Shaun.

what do you want to know?
To my knowledge the piston slap issue seesm to have affected only the UK car and not the jap sti engine.
Dont know exactly what you are after or your partiality to rear end driven car, but as I siad before the type ra v limited 2 door for sale in the for sale section is basically a great budget P1.
As for engine reliability etc, no one can say as we dont know why they ever drop, but if you use decent oil etc, there is no reason why it should be any worse than any other impreza.

Ian,
I don't wanna buy another Escort, as that would be my third. The fact that I am doomed to owning one for life, must be telling me something.
Surprising enough, I'm not interested in big power anymore.....hence the reason for possibly buying another Scoob again!!!

no issues.
5 has the phase 2 engine which supposedly has a better intercooler, but as a starting point it makes no diff.
phase 2 standard ecu is more advanced on the 5.
4 gets the new style interior which was more modern.
type rs have 2 doors and no abs, 2 pot rear brakes and rear drive biad with active centre diff. some dont have centre diff, and may therefore come with abs instead.
v lims have roof vent.
no problem except for standard big end potential issues which doesnt escape any model or variant that I know of.
Some say the type r gearbox is more prone to damaging synchros. Cannot see why, only difference is ratios, so people with lower type r gearing may abuse their boxes more as it is sprint orientated.
Apart from that, nothing to add.

P1 fanatic, if you are a P1 fanatic, I have said it before,
consider this car:
http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/thread.asp?threadid=102977
You can buy the same warranty as any dealer would sell you, and have some serious money left over, not to mention the handling of the P1 as opposed to the type r which is not so easy to handle.

I have been speaking to the owner about that one as it does seem a great price for a car in that condition. A few cosmetic changes and voila! I'd never really considered a jap import before so am reading up on them.

If you put P1 shocks on it and get the prodrive geometry, for an extra £500, it will have exactly the same drivetrain and geometry as the P1, only difference will be cosmetic, and the engine will rev to prob 7500, rather than 8000, but since it is an import, you mind playing a little with the engine, and once that is done, there is bugger all difference between sti and non sti spec engines.

I'm also looking at buying a type R and want dealer peace of mind for at least the first year. I was looking at a version 4 with version 5 front and rear spoilers. 25K on the clock for £15.5k (will talk down to £15k for cash). £315 for 1 years warranty and need a tracker on top for my ins company. Does that sound like a reasonable price for that mileage?
Are these imports ok for higher mileage as will be keeping for at least the next 3 years (I do about 8k per year). I suppose TSL etc are well in tune with servicing and maintaining Jap imports alongside standard UK models?
Simon.
P.S. If anyones got a low mileage Sti 5 Type R going for sale then let me know!!!
