Very nice
I wouldn't worry too much about the running in period. If the dealer hasnt suggested or the handbook doesnt state any specific break in instructions, I would just take it easy for a few hundred miles with varying styles of driving increasing the revs gently going up and down the rev range. I wouldn't giving it high revs or holding boost for long periods until it had a few hundred miles on it at least.
Modern engines don't require the long break in routines that were required years ago.
When is the first service due? I'm guessing its a year?

Usually 4000rpm red line for the first 1000miles with lots of load variations.
From an Owners Handbook..............

Avoid starting suddenly?
One of my family members got a hire car with under 100 miles on it, the person who picked the car up didn't do any of the above, think its crazy even hiring out a new car under 1000 miles, as we all know there going to get thrashed. As why would the person hiring it care.

originally garage said stay under 3000rpm for 1000 miles, then changed their mind to 600.
someone i really trust with cars, races, drifts, does all his own work etc, said 500 would suffice and like you say-vary it, so push it a bit then back off, dont hold that for too long, but dont panic and drive it like an OAP either.
so?!
first service will be in a year yep
i LOVE it,makes me smile hearing it burble away, and had half the company out of their offices standing admiring it yesterday lol!

Your friend has given you sound advice, I'm lucky and get a brand new car every year or so but its not a performance car and never intend to keep them longer than two years so longevity really isnt a concern. What running in period? Other than taking it easy on the drive home cos I want to keep it clean, it gets driven as normal from the start.
Most of us that have had Subaru engines rebuilt will use a semi synthetic or mono grade oil to bed in then change the oil to fully synthetic after the first few hundred miles but these are mostly engines built for high power. If I was lucky enough to own a brand new scoob and it was a keeper I would probably change the oil every six months.
