Default Anyone been to Japan?

So I'm heading over to Tokyo in a couple of weeks and wondered if anyone's been there? have any tips. I'd like to get to a car meet there aswel. Got 6 days there so a fair bit of time to explore. Also I'd like to find a decent parts shop to maybe get myself some goodies and bring them back in my suitcase. Nothing too big just trick bits really.

Thanks in advance!

Dave

I've never been but it's on my list.

I'd want to go on the bullet train, visit some of the big RC car shops (I race and collect RC so this would be big for me). Visit a car auction. Have food in the robot restaurant. Try to get into Fukishima town.

I'd go in October and take in the F1 race.

Thumbs up

We went to Japan for our honeymoon, travelled around by train mostly. Cars are generally small compact cuboid daihatsus etc but we saw some amazing condition classics. Shibuya district we saw a gathering of highly modded scoobies but I'm sure there are better places out of Tokyo. Get out there and enjoy its a censory overload and not a diesel car anywhere.

@ Edd the Shinkasen is bloody fantastic, comfortable, clean and on time

@ OP check the weather for the time of year, try the authentic food and I don't mean sushi (although there is Subway,Big BoyMcDonalds over there ..the teriyaki burger is fantastic).
Learn some of the polite phrases as well although most shops have at least one person who has an understanding of English.
If you smoke check out their laws as they are different to ours

1) book the day trip to Mount Fuji, lake Ashe, Mount Hakon return by bullet train.
2) visit the sky tower
3) visit the robot cafe in Shinjuku
4) visit Shibuya and the iconic crossing
5) visit Tokyo tower
6) visit Ginza the famous shopping district.
7) visit the famous Tsukiji fish market.

As a minimum, robot cafe and trip to Mount Fuji book in advance on Japanican website.

Thanks for all the replies! It's great to see people who have been have nothing bad to say! Everyone iv spoken to says it's amazing so. Cannot wait. The shibuya crossing is up there on the list along with Mt. Fuji.

@beastie you've got in prettty much spot on really. We've planned a few things on your list, although the fish market would be a good one.
The love Hotels though :/ they seem very seedy/weird. I'd like to go to one just for a laugh to see what it's like. We watched one videos online when we started looking at Tokyo and it just blew my mind, the robot cafe just blew me away. What a crazy but amazing idea

This! Is a very good idea to learn the phrases of a country, too many people get ignorant when they visit another country and just expect them to know English. Am trying atm to learn a few general phrases Just so they can see I'm trying. Ha

If your looking for a budget hotel I'd recommend the APA Ginza Kyobashi hotel. Small room but huge bed and close to underground station and Ginza. Also within walking distance of Tokyo station. For underground get a Pasmo card at the machine in the station (or you can get a Suica card) then it's just tap and go on the underground network. There's a free app Tokyo metro which tells you where to change station and other details.

Japan has the capsule hotels be careful when booking you dont book one by accident, be like staying in a luggage locker.

Free wifi is difficult to find, best to get a sim at the airport for ipad or similar. It will do internet, phone calls not allowed by foreigners on jap sims. Or you can rent mobile hotspot. I just got a sim from an airport shop on arrival for 40USD and after setting up in my ipad worked seamlessly.

Fantastic country!
Wish we could go back...we were in the country for a month but no where near enough!

For 6 days, the above sounds plenty! You'll spend plenty of time just wandering around taking it all in! Not like any other country I've been to!

The only thing no one else has mentioned....and definitely worth taking the time (especially seeing as your on a car forum!).....

I hired the Hakosuka for a drive! Absolutely phenomenal! Fantastic experience with no regrets what so ever! Plenty of cars to choose from and they were quite interested to hear about my T25....

I'm really jealous I hope you have a good time.

Has anyone ever traveled somewhere alone? I'm a loner and really want to go but can you hire someone to show you around or something? Or do you just book everything here and hope for the best when you get there?

You'll need an international driving licence if you want to drive in Japan and have a British licence. Get it before you go.

Not exactly doing it on your own but they will do you a taylor made tour if you ask and can put you in contact with reputable local agents pretty much anywhere in the world. https://www.exploreworldwide.com/

If you use fun2drive then contact them early for a booking and they will send you all the necessary requirements/docs etc.
Straight forward to get an international driving permit.

We also found http://www.japanspecialist.co.uk very helpful. They organised most of our package which made things much easier! Great service.
