Default Top engine of the older generation?

Hey all new to scooby s forgive my ignorance

I never really never had much interest till the last few months when i nearly swapped my 96" S2 but decided against it due to the rising cost & limited number built then there was the Legnum but couldn't swap that after spending £33k.

There are so many different models, variations & engines it's a little overwhelming.

I'm only interested in the older models upto 2000 i think the last of the classic shapes were made with the square headlights Version 6 was the last but could be wrong so don't quote me on that.

Which model from 1998-2000 2 door or 4 has the most reliable engine for making big power upto 5-600whp?

Any help appreciated.

Regards

Neal

Any model can achieve this power level if your prepared to have the appropriate engine work carried out, Certainly you would be looking at a forge built unit. and the gearbox would need uprated along with breaks suspension bigger turbo fuelling, management the list goes on.

The simplicity of the Subaru is that the WRX is the more softer out of the box model, the STi has more power and some what stronger internals out of the box, however like I said the power can be got if your pockets are deep enough.

500whp is around 350bhp so for not much money you should have no problem achieving this on a gc8 sti,the gearbox will be about on it's limits and the turbo and injectors just about maxed out.

Hey Chris,

Yes i did exactly the same with my Legnum twin GT287R,Vipec V44 everything forged ect.

The STI seems to be the best starting point a 2 door preferably, Wha the deal with the 2.5L RS-T engine swaps? Larger CC but does the whole drive train have to be swapped over to?

Which version & a limited edition 5 or 6?

Thats what i meant 5-600bhp at the wheels, Injectors,Turbo's aren't a problem cheap as chips but the gearbox on Subaru's is where i come unstuck.

What options are there?

Cheers everybody

BHP is measured at the flywheel
WHP is measured at the wheels.
So are you looking for 500bhp or 500whp?

A 500bhp turbo I would say is not cheap as chips
A 350bhp((500whp) turbo would be cheap as chips and a 5 speed gearbox should handle that power level.
After that the 6 speed would be the route to take at around £1500(All inc) if you fit yourself.

I think you will find for 500 WHP you would require an engine figure of 600+ BHP

"Wheel Horse Power. Unlike bhp, whp is the power output measured at the wheels. This is the information a dyno run provides and usually reads around *15 per cent less than the power measured at the engine (bhp) - this is because power is lost in the driveline (including clutch and transmission)."

Yes mate 500whp, My legnum is flywheel 520hp at 1.3 bar just had an Evo TME transfer box put in should be back by next week fingers crossed.
Turbo's aren't a problem.
A 6 speed out of a JDM STi V 8?

Thanks ossett2k2 all noted.

Just a few pics of the legnum build.

Ahh I got that the wrong way around then!
It's more like 30% difference on a 4x4 car.
I do know you can increase WHP without increasing bhp by reducing rotational mass,I'm guessing that's why bhp is a more accurate measurement of engine power?

Both UK sti and jdm sti 6 speed boxes are pretty strong, far better than the standard 5 speed.
Mine is jdm and I prefer the shorter ratio, the UK box has longer gears so might be better for BIG power, all depends on preference I guess.

Btw the legnum looks a lovely car, great build and spec I bet it's fun to drive

To answer the original question - none of the bottom ends of the engines from those years is any good at that power, as they are all open deck.....unless you can find a 2.2 block from a 22B and turn it into a 2.35 = mega money.

The easier and cheaper alternative is to source a 2 litre closed deck block from the early Imprezas and turn that into a 2.1 stroker.

Also if your looking at whp/bhp from a uk or US perspective, very different things

Personally i think longer ratio gears would be best the only reason why is my legnum goes through gears like my old CR250 Red Rocket can't change gear fast enough in the car.
Would the standard gearbox hold up to that sot of power?
What RPM will the STI rev to?

Cheers 2K2

I very much doubt there will be many 22B engines knocking about if there are any i would imagine they get snapped up quicker than the ad is put up.

What is the difference between an open deck & closed deck? Something to do with less parts?

Cheers Rossy

I'm not speaking from experience as only run around 400bhp on my 6 speed,as you will know it's torque which kills gearboxes,I have seen/read of plenty of cars running 500-600+bhp on standard 6 speeds,I suppose you can kill any box of you try hard enough
Redline on the sti is higher @8k as it had better heads&cams.

As for 2.2cdb's they do come up from time to time, there were some brand new ones for sale on here a few month back for about £2k each, don't think they sold.
A lot use ASPerformance for block work so there are plenty of options, some even use the 2.2n/a blocks from the U.S. cars and have them decked.

Is that the work of ASPerformance?
That block looks like it would take anything you threw at it
2.1? 2.35? 2.5?

Brilliant example Tidgy they say pictures speak a thousand words it's so so true!

The walls are whats known as liners, there actually pretty thin on the 2.5. failures tend to happen because they flex, by closing the top end and making them rigid helps stop them from flexing. Even closed decked 550 is prob the limit you want to go.

Also should be noted needs to be done right or is a waste of time, machined for the insterts then forced in. Just putting something thats about the right size in with a hammer doesn't work.

Seen some right dodgy attempts at closed decking
