Depends on what boost he's wanting to run.
Anything over 300 bhp and I'd go Manley rods for piece of mind, strong and not too pricey really.
ACL race bearings are a good idea too.
May find that the forged pistons (mine are Mahle) are slappy when cold...it soon goes once warmed up (96% anyway) it's because they are very slightly undersized to allow them to expand in the bores.
Well fitted / clocked rings will see no oil loss.

You don't say whether he has STI or WRX rods... WRX rods will be good for 350bhp maybe slightly more... STI Rods up to 450.

If he's not planning on big power then, I'd save the cash and spend it on ARP head studs and decent head gaskets.

If it's a WRX he'll have gearbox issues way before he bends any rods... which would be more down to mapping and DET than the rods themselves.

All depends how much he wants to spend and what his plans are for the car too... as that will dictate build spec.

More info would be good.

It's a wrx number 4 piston was shot hence the rebuild I don't think he looking for massive power just between 300-350 and not looking on spending a fortune either

I'd just tell him to stick to the wrx rods if he's really short on cash, and like I said ARP head studs and maybe Cosworth gaskets...

As a side note, might be worth asking in the wanted section for some STI rods as it would make the car more desirable come sale time as well as future proofing.

At the end of the day, while it's out and in bits he may as well make a decent job of it.
