Default Looking for a WRX as my first impreza

I'm new to the Subaru scene and I've always had this bug to buy one however I'm just looking for some advice on what model or year to buy

I'm thinking of trying a WRX first before a sti as it's less expensive to give me a taste of what a Subaru is all about

I was looking at WRX bugeye or blobeye I would want to upgrade it a little, brakes ,suspension and maybe a little more power

My previous cars have been mainly n\a fwd vtec Honda's, apart from a Leon cupra r which I've just sold, so I'm guessing this is going to be a fairly different experience in driving

I just want some quick advice and info about them before I go for it just to make sure I don't make a wrong decision or buy a dog etc

I had a blob wrx as my first Scooby and I really liked it, fitted sti front brakes, sti wheels and a 2nd decat, uprated inlet y hose and a remap so basically prodrive spec.
I however always wanted an sti so had a jdm widetrack next, much better car for me, Depends what you want but if you are hankering for an sti then just go for it, the running costs are not much different I even found insurance virtually the same.

You will burn money upgrading a WRX to handle/perform like an STI anyway, so you might as well just get one to start with.

Depends what your budget is. Sti is the way forward.

Yeah, you’ll have torque and something will actually happen when you press the accelerator lol.

I've posted this list before but there are a few things to check.
Knocking rear struts.
Sticking front calipers.
Rocker cover gaskets weeping oil onto exhaust.
Rust. Sills, arches and area under radiator. If you can check area behind wheel arch cover in front of footwell.
Radiators collapse. Look from top down and see if there is a bulge.
Should be no smoke.
At this age you may have to replace a few bushes/drop links.
Be wary of any dodgy mods.
Generally they are pretty tough.

What? in a WRX?

Seriously, most modern hot hatches will p!ss all over one, the stock brakes are absolutely rubbish too.

If you're looking at buying a standard one, be prepared to throw a couple of grand at it, brakes, suspension, remap etc.

They are good cars once they're sorted out, I have owned both a WRX and an STi - The WRX was easily the more useable everyday car.

If you're looking for out and out performance, the STi is the one to buy.

Basically, the gearbox difference make the whole experience different. A WRX is far easier to drive normally, the gear throw softer and ratios just more like a normal car.

The STI will give your left hand callouses. The shift is sharp, precise and direct, and the sixth gear means ratios are closer and you end up changing gear more often. Which eventually hurts. Till you get used to it.

The STI is built to take it. Full Stop. The WRX is a road car. You'll end up spending more than you would have done buying an STI in the first place, and it's still just a WRX and valued as one all along.

Best of luck.

Most modern hot hatches would **** over a lot of scoob’s these Days! Do what’s best for you! If you have money for a jdm go for one of those as they are better than ghe uk versions.

Thank you for all your responses much appreciated

I know the sti is a much better car to start with and is the more raw and focused car I'm a little out of budget for a decent one from what I can see I'll need 10k plus for a nice sti
I could wait a couple of months then I could get one

I won't be doing any track days so which ever one I buy weather it's the WRX or sti it'll be a weekend road car that I can look after keep clean and enjoy I'm not fussed about modern day hot hatches being faster for me it's about the driving Experiance and overall package of a car I've had a drive in golf r and S3 even a fk2 type r but I'm just find them quite full and boring to drive they seem to lack character , I've never driven a impreza so I don't know what there like but I've heard they are great drive and very driver focused a good all round package

I always love it when a scoob comes flying past me they sound awesome and look awesome so I just thought that's it I'm buying one so here I am

So if I were to get a sti or a WRX which year would you recommend I like the blobeye and Hawkeye I know the Hawkeye is 2.5 litre and not a 2ltr ,so which has its benefits and why

Cheers
Adam

If you don't want anymore power than 330bhp (WRX with STi bolt ons) then a WRX with mods will be far cheaper than buying an STi. If you want more performance than that, buy an STi to begin with.

Thank you for all the responses

I think a WRX is a good option for me as I've never owned a impreza before I can always upgrade to a sti in the future if I wanted too, (which knowing me im sure I would)

i think 300 odd bhp will be enough for me for the road , the idear is the car to be a weekend car and for use after work I'm a bricklayer so going out in the van on the weekend isn't fun so I've always had a second car

I'm not fussed about other modern day hot hatches being quicker because I want the driving Experiance of a car and it's not all about how fast a car is In a straight line i much prefer twisty winding roads and I've always loved that boxer engine sound

I won't be doing any track days etc

I appreciate why others have said buy a sti because it's the much better model out of the box however for me I think starting out with a WRX is the way to go now the question is what year do I go for?

I like the blobeye and the Hawkeye and even the earlier bugeye I quite like so which one out of these would be best as in reliability etc

All 3 versions of the Newage share the same body from the A-Pillar back. It’s just the front end (bonnet, wings, headlights, bumper etc) which differ. The Bug has a lighter alloy bonnet compared to the steal one on the Blob. The Bug and Blob are near enough identical mechanically. I have a Bug and Blob WRX and the only thing that you notice between driving the 2 is that the Blob has lighter steering. There were interior updates through the years, mainly seats and dash/trim. Everything from a Bug will fit a Blob and vice versa. So you can easily mix and match parts. The same goes for many of the STi parts also.

Most of the above is also true of the Hawkeye, with the obvious difference of the engine and also wheel PCD changes. The Hawkeye comes with the 2.5 engine (unless you get a JDM model) which gives greater torque and improvements in performance/drivability that you would expect with an extra 25% capacity. It does however have well documented fundamental design issues which are not present on the 2.0l. That’s not to say that every 2.5 fails (and the WRX EJ255 seems to have less reported problems than the EJ257 in the STi, although that could be down to how the are tuned & driven) but you should be aware of the potential issues.

So the 2.0 will probably give you less sleepless nights. Unless you have a strong preference on appearance, buy whichever one is in the best condition. With the Bug being older, rust can be more prevalent.
