Default Should I completely avoid the 2.5?

Potentially in the market for another Impreza so I've been looking around a bit online.
Still undecided exactly what model I want really but the current candidates include;

Spec D
A-Line
Blobeye Spec C
WR1

Classics,
1998 Type R
RB5

Only because they are the ones I've seen decent examples of for sale at the moment.

MY question is, should I completely rule out the 2.5? I know these generally need a rebuild but a few I've seen have had two! The Spec D above has had a rebuild last year by a main dealer (pro=possible warranty?, con=not forged etc.).

Any advice gratefully accepted.

Surprised you have listed an A-Line as it's a JDM automatic model (with 2.5L engine)

Have a few grand banked for possible rebuild and hope you don't need to. Otherwise stick to a 2.0 (JDM if in budget). 2.0s can still fail but usually down to how they have been maintained/modded. Whereas 2.5s seem to fail even when stock and fastidiously maintained, due to fundamental design/engineering issues.

Couldn't agree more, our 2.5 had the cracked oil pick up! But is now an awesome rd car, engine tuner built and maintained, I'm also tempted with a forester sti at the moment, but as many have said on other posts and threads, just be prepared just incase....
but I would buy another 2.5

Fair enough.

From 2008 onwards it refers to a 2.5L auto
