Cigar Lighter Fix

Cigar Lighter Fix
Hi guys
So my cigar lighter no longer works, it was just after using a tyre inflater which as I have found out is a very common fault. The fuse link burns out and then stops the cigar lighter from working.
Options seemed simple enough, buy a genuine replacement or buy aftermarket for under a fiver. But then that got me thinking if I went genuine the same common fault would exist meaning the next time I go to use a tyre inflater with it the fuse will go again.
Now the question is can I use a fuse wire that you find inside consumer units and solder that in place on the cigar lighter (replace the burnt fuse for the new fuse) or am I over simplifying it

The fuse isn't removeable, its not the one in the fuse box thats gone.

Could you replace the fusable link with this? solder the fuse holder tails where the link would go, then use a normal fuse and retain protection.

Thats the fuse thats gone.
Was thinking of replacing with one of those fuses.
But like I said just want to make sure I'm doing it correctly lol. Read on a few forums where people were saying that it could start a fire etc if you only rely on the fuse box fuse etc (not that I was thinking of removing it completely)
Thanks guys let me know your thoughts on it

Any idea of the Amp rating and what would be safe to go up to.
Thanks guys

Was thinking 10amp so looks like I'm on the right track lol.
Just realised we might be talking about two different things, did you mean fuse wire or plug in fuse. I think the wire goes from 5A to 15A

If you fit a inline, just start off low and go up until it doesn`t pop when you use the lighter,
see if this is the same as you were thinking, better to start low and pop a few.

Thats a good idea mate

Not quite what I was after but that seems like it should work. I noticed that in the ad it says 30A fuse, what is the original one rated at. Also is there any danger to changing the Amp if the original fuse was less.

Thank you very much you saved my bacon! I replaced the burnt fuse wire as you said and it works great.i got a new plug cheap said to work for gc8 Impreza but it's the wrong size, plus it don't have inbuilt fuze like the old original. Thank you again.!

Glad it worked mate. I never got around to doing it, took the car off the road a long time ago and ended up buying a tyre inflator that connects to the battery instead. Will keep this in mind

I've done the same I connect the inflator direct to the battery, but generally I use my stand up hand bicycle pump which is quicker for slow flatty. The original cigarette socket is far superior. The cheap new one from eBay don't have its own in-built fuse and is generic not really meant for gc8. Cheers again
