Default Possible ECU fault?

Hi guys, need some advice please. I have a 1999 gc8, driving down the road engine cut out, speedo and rev counter went straight to zero and temp gauge went past hot. the car will not start now with no check engine light. when you turn the ignition off, windows, heater still work. ignition lights are partially on. checked as many earths as i can see but decided to remove the injection ecu. all goes back to normal. i have not had a chance to check the wiring to the ecu as i know there could be a fault with the wiring.if i disconnect the battery and reconnect it all goes back to normal apart from no engine light, turn the ignition on and off and all faults return.
my ecu is an E3 22611ae801 which i have found on ebay and im not sure if i should just buy it just to check.....if i do is there any coding that needs to be done (immobiliser)?

The UK 99 Turbo ECU is plug and play, so if it's from the same age/spec it should work.

I found that the 1999 uk impreza needed to be recoded but the rb5 1999 did not so it can be confusing.
