Default Tinny rattle noise subaru impreza sport 1999

Hi guys, I've got a 1999 sport classic. When revving i get a tinny rattle noise for the front of the car at the start and after the rev and sometimes during alittle. Best videos I can get of it, can hear it when i let go of the throttle. I've checked my heart shield, What could it be ? Any ideas ??

I had a sport a long time ago and is was a heat shield around the exhaust. Exact same description.

I've found one heat shield above the exhaust that was bad and removed it however the noise is still there and. I've been told it could be a release bearing on the clutch as it's not a constant rattle

Yes the release bearing can make a noise but i would not describe it as a rattle. Usually you can tell as it coincides with the clutch pedal movement. Hope it is another heat shield then that is resonating when revved and again as the revs die down.

I'm hoping it is a heat shield too as dont feel like taking the box out aha. It sounds like a load of metal ***** in a tin shaking really fast. I'll give it a rev tomorrow with the clutch down and see if the noise goes and let you know

Clutching at straws here. How old is the cat. Mine collapsed and made a hissing noise, not a rattle but just a thought.

I'm also betting on heat shield - there are several on the exhaust (probably rusted through)

So been at it today, put the clutch down as I revved and the noise was still there so it rules out the clutch release bearing. And removed the heat shields from the manifold at the bottom of the block and the noise is still there. So that's the main heat shield from under the cockpit and top of the manifold. Any more guesses ???

Could be the cat as it seems to be coming from around the drivers area

Where would be the best place to find a cat as a lot of people scrap them

I don't know as I almost did exactly that scrap it. In the end I sold to young guy for £250 who was doing it up. Drove 300miles with low loader. Clutch was slipping too. This was a good 6 to 7 years ago. Back then a new exhaust fitted was 650 quid, **** that. I bought a system for 300 and fitted myself, fairly easy job. Can you not buy them anymore?

I would bet that it’s almost definitely the cat as I had a similar noise on my Sport when I owned it. When you said it sounded like ball bearings in a tin can that’s exactly what was wrong with mine, it’s the ceramic honeycomb that has broken free and is rattling around in the cat pipe. I bought a second hand one from eBay, be sure to get the right one though as the early sport had two seperate cats bolted together and the facelift sport had an all-in-one cat pipe
