Default how to check if gauges work

Hi All,

I've found someone selling a set of JDM defi gauges & controller but they have been removed from the car and he said he didn't test them (he's a breaker).
Is there a way I can test them off the car (at least for power if nothing else)?
The gauges are boost, oil and water temp.

Thanks! Adam.

A breaker didn't test them while they were in the car????????????????????

Can't remember exactly how the wiring is on the defis but if I remember correctly then connect up to a battery (12v) and they should do a sweeping self test. Thats a good start to work out if gauges work. Then its on to the senders.

Thanks Nossy. I was thinking they would do a test sweep if I power up the controller as I think these are daisy chained. This guy isn't a specialist subaru breaker and it sounds like he doesn't normally deal in this kind of stuff. It's obviously a risk, but if the price is right it's probably worth a punt.

That would explain it then. You don't normally see non subaru breakers deciding to break subarus these days. What car was he breaking and does he have any other bits

He doesn't have anything else subaru for sale, mostly stuff from your basic family cars. these are from a JDM blob I believe.

Thanks! Adam.
So he is selling them as not working?

Price up your senders first because they may all be broken, if he can't power the gauges up for you then walk away.

Or buy new and save yourself a lot of hassle.

Just talking from experience, ive been shat on many times by breakers.

Good luck.

id say he has priced them low. I still want to pay as little as possible though, as you say, I am looking at them and presuming something won’t work. I’m definitely in 2 minds, could be a bargain, could be a waste. 🤷‍♂️

You may be lucky pal but as a general rule IME with used subaru parts you buy cheap you buy twice.

Lots of so called breakers out there trying to make big £££ out of rare subaru parts.

Sounds like you have your head screwed on the right way so i hope you get lucky.

I prefer to buy new if i can, ive had a couple of intimidating experiences when i have asked too many questions.

Kind of left a bad taste in the mouth for me.

Be careful who you deal with and again, good luck mate.

Siv.

Thanks for your input guys.
I decided against these in the end, I'm going to keep an eye on them and may make a low ball offer if they're still available after Xmas.

£450 but he said he was open to an offer. When he said they were unchecked it started the alarm bells ringing and that price halved in my head!

The only ones I've been able to find are £800 for a triple pod and controller.
Where are you finding them at that price?

Defi genome gauges are worth more than the defi stepmaster but afaik they are the same just rebranded STI.

£450 for gauges pod, controller wiring and senders is about the right money....... in working condition.

£800 for defi genome sti as above is a fair shout considering how rare they are.

Not sure if you can buy the stepmaster series new anymore, i swapped my defi stepmasters for prosport digital peak gauges.

https://rspec.co.uk/gauges-60mm-evo-...eries-c-3_148/

so much easier to read than a defi gauge imo.

As a guide/comparison you can buy the above 60mm gauges and a new ATI pod for £440

Just an option for you, they were excellent in my last car and i have them in my current car without issue.

If your prepared to have a go at your own installation i reckon you can get the prosport 60mm peak gauges in your car for under £300

Heres how i fitted mine before i splashed out on a pod.

Thanks Siv! Those digital ones look great.
I was actually looking for a set of the genome sti ones, like you said they seem to be very rare and therefore expensive.
I'll take a look at the aftermarket options as that is cheaper and then I can just buy new.

Ebay, facebook, breakers etc. Second I have seen them around £450 if memory is correct. Brand new you're looking about £800.

You can buy bundles with gauges, sensors, fittings, pod etc or build the bundle piece by piece money to be saved wither way depending on where you are buying the stuff.
