Question Adjusting doors on a classic

My passenger door on my Type R where it meets the rear quarter sits too proud and looks like it's not fully closed. I noticed the door striker is loose but every time I tighten the screws/bolts the striker moves outboard.

This. I position it to the left but it works itself to the right when tightened...

Just drill the holes out a little.

Do you mean threadlocker on the threads of the screws/bolts?

Won't that make it worse? It's only slightly loose but I can't secure it in place where I want it (more inboard).

Also, does anyone know how to lower and/or raise the door?

Having looked at the 97 manual the only adjustment as far as I can see for a classic is at the door hinge to body location.

The striker plate will alway revert to the same position as both the screws and seating are tapered and the mounting points are fixed.

Have you got the correct striker plate fitted?? Yours looks diferent to the listed P/N which may be the reason the door sticks out.

It may be possible to adjust the lock mechanism but I think it's the same situation with tapered seats.

UPDATE

Your striker plate looks similar to the Newage versions - early 61264FE000 and 03 onwards 61264SA000

Hi Don, the image I posted is just a generic pic I found online but my striker is the exact same one as your first photo (dull gold).

Does the manual state how to make the door sit flush with the rear quarter? I also need to adjust the height slightly to satisfy my ocd.

Cheers

Cheers Don, much appreciated!

I'm guessing it means to tap the striker hence the 'CAUTION: be careful not to damage striker'. I've tried tightening the screws too but can't generate enough torque to keep the striker exactly where I want it.

Unless the captive nuts for the striker are mounted on a plate that moves within the structure of the door pillar to give you adjustment, it's pointless hitting it.
Maybe they've rusted up in there current position. and as said before the striker has tapered seats for the tapered screws so it will always go back to the original position unless the nuts move.

Apologies, forgot to update this. There's no rust whatsoever, the striker and screws are like new. I've successfully adjusted the height of the door but it still doesn't sit flush. Scratching my head on this one...

I did a little more research and the below links seem to imply the striker is what needs repositioning, but Don, you state the striker will always revert to its default position.

I was wounding if the hinges have bent over time. I read on one thread to just jack the door up a tad. Not sure if that is a good idea or not.

People tend to lean on the as they are frameless.

Refer to my post re: captive nuts being able to move.
The fitting screw has a tapered seat, the striker plate has a tapered seat for the screw. Unless the captive nut moves (mounted on a movable plate?) it will always revert to the same position.

Cheers Don. I had another play with the hinges and striker but still not able to get the door sitting flush. I removed the rubber trim/seal on the B pillar to see if it made a difference but none whatsoever. I can push the door in to where I want it but hear the rubber trim/seal on the door squeaking. I've inspected the seal and believe everything is lined up correctly. Next step may be to remove the seal entirely to see if makes a difference.

Just a thought, if the door isn't sitting flush what if its the door itself. The lock on the door might need adjusting.

Yes mate, had thought of that and it's on my ''to do'' checklist. Perhaps the fountain of knowledge (Don) can confirm whether I need to tinker with it?
