Was made an offer for the Saxo tonight and asked for 12 hours to consider it. Done the maths and it looks like I'll take it meaning she'll be gone on Friday *sniff* *sniff*
That means I need a scooby and one more just to be sure Looking for an MY99 with preferably less than 40k on the clock and pretty standard (ss bb and ITG would be nice). I've never bought a scooby before so all and any advice would be appreciated. Sh*t scared of getting a lemon so what should I test, look for, look under, over or inbetween, etc. Which of the various checks (HPI, mechanical, etc) are essential, useful and plain useless, etc. Help me find my new toy peeps
Cheers,
Very excited Kenny

Good work fella be good to have you on board...
Advice... make sure the nearest big service has been done.
check all gaps.... and spot welds... overall condition of the car... check windows open and close without scratching... and check it drives smooth really..
These cars are pretty reliable and robust! so you shouldn't have to much problem..
Good luck

Cheers for the suggestions/encouragements guys. Keep em' coming
Blue, might take you up on that offer - not many 99's in scotland though
Whacky can't find an email address for you? I'm getting booted off this computer soon by the old man but you can email me at work tomorrow at kmacleod@eastlothian.gov.uk

Hmmm, I did a fair few UK V Import threads last month and I drew from them that even with Optimax and booster they still tend to go pear-shaped. Also, who knows what the previous owner did. If the previous owner of a UK ran on 95 RON and booted it from cold that would be nowhere near as bad as doing the same to an import. If a sweet one came along I'd look into it I suppose.
Anyone got thoughts of various checks, mechanical, history and otherwise?

Booting any turbo car form cold wont do it any good!
there are plenty of Grey Import cars running in the UK with no problems! If you were worried get something like a knock link fitted.
Personally my car MY00 Turbo 200 has only EVER been run on Optimax.

Saxo,
I've had my MY99 for about 8 months now and I'm planning to write a review of what I think of it from a very practical standpoint. Keep a look out - I'll try to get something here before the week's out!

Saxo boy,
Was in a similar situation 18 months ago - Sold my Elan SE, and on the Scooby hunt...
Drove a few UK cars MY00/98 etc...And was very keen on a PPP'd car with 6 pots....Till I drove a lightly modded STi IV Type R...
*Weeeeee* bit of a difference IMHO....
Suggest you at least try an STi...Mucho grin factor....(In fact, too much - That's why I flogged mine to save my license!)
Ross.

as a general tip, get up to around 35mph and select 5th gear and nail the throttle - if the revs rise but speed doesn't - leave well alone as the clutch is more than likely trashed.

Saxo Boy, your no stranger to this forum, so your not completely unfamiliar with the world of Scooby’s.
If you’re going for a particular year model, then research the problems people have had on that year.
You'll know what to look out for then and the mileage/age that it may occur, i.e. MY99's have been know to have piston slap. Get it inspected and see if you can get one from a dealer.
Cheers.
Ian.

Saxo Boy,
As I see you are in Scotland, there has been a Silver Xreg (UK Spec) in the on-line trader for some weeks now, low miles and under 14k I think, it's in Falkirk so a lot closer to you than it is to me otherwise I'd probably go for it.
Good luck, hope you get a sweet one, just be careful, if anything looks a bit iffy, walk away.

Not sure if you can stretch to a MY00, but mine is up for sale as I'm looking to buy a Westfield.
I am gutted about selling it, particularly as I've only recently got the sills coded (black sills on a silver scoob really bug me!) and put the Scorpion on it so it pulls harder than ever and looks sweet. However now is the time to sell as otherwise I will have to renew my insurance then cancel it not long after. The scoob was owned by a mate for the first 18 months before I bought it off him btw.
Take a look at http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/threa...hreadid=105129 for details, any questions just shout.

Otherwise take your time buying. Plenty of well-looked after examples appear from time to time by respected members of this BBS. Happy hunting.

Have a quick shufty at the Subaru website .. Perth (T&C) seem
to have 3 MY99 or similar Scooby's.
look here
DBM - 1999 - 16,495 has 28K on it
DGM - 2000 - 15,995 has 20K on it and ....
RB5 - 1999 - 18,995 has 31K on it .. I think this one has been there for a whiley so you may get a good deal
If you are going the dealer route that is. Speak to Gary and see what he can do.
Cheers,
Doofus.
