Default TD05 16G or TD04 19T

Bought a TD05 16G but can get my TD04 upgraded to 19T, it's not a daily driver. And lag doesn't bother me.

So I've ran both a td05-16g and now a 19t (though my exhaust wheel is not quite the same as yours would be).

The td05-16g will likely make a bit more power, but my car at least didn't feel quite as eager with the td05-16g as it does with the hybrid td04 (mine's a td04HL-19t billet). In the real world, I think my car is faster now with the hybrid TD04 than it was with the 16g - there's less lag and it's much more predictable and responsive, and it spools earlier too (it's a long time since i ran the 16g, but i estimate about 600rpm between them which is quite a lot IMO).

My next "turbo test" will likely be a td05-16g with a billet wheel, which I expect will be similar to an sc36, but I would not go directly to a non-billet 16g over my own hybrid, if that makes sense.

On the other hand, if you have the td05-16g already and it's in good nick, there's no harm in trying to see if you like it, right?

A td04h-19t you should see just north of 300 hp, with the limiting factor being the exhaust wheel on the standard TD04 turbo.

Above makes perfect sense,
I was generally not impressed with the spool of the TD05 16G at least with the supporting mods that I had at the time, (which had included a large CRX racing TMIC and just the PPP down pipe/ Nvidia Uppipe)
these were high volume and I think the Invidia as large bore was really a 450 bhp item, and the large CRX race TMIC needed to be filled before it gets the air into the intake so the whole package felt laggy, despite JGMs, wizardry.
For a good kick in the pants from low down, I reckon a hybrid TD04 is ideal. The headline bhp figure does not always mean much, For a fast road car you need buckets of torque from as low as possible.
Running now the SC36 which is essentially a Blouch turbo but with a 1/3 lighter wheel in combination to a mid sized diameter Harvey uppipe and the smaller Sti V8 TMIC I feel a marked improvement in throttle response over the TD05 16G package
the torque graphs show a slightly faster spool and the curve is being held flatter for longer at lower boost. But even this setup does not give you the stamp on almost instant response of the original TD04 ,
Port matching the headers for a less disturbed faster gas flow speed and perhaps a CR rise from 8:1 to 8.5/8.6:1 might help me, but I still doubt that the bottom end will ever perform better than the hybrid TD04.
