Default Boot Seal

Hi all,

2007 Hawkeye STi saloon.

Looking at my boot seal, water seems to be breaching it after washing / heavy rain etc. I can't see that the seal I have at the moment is purposely cut for when fitting at the factory.
Would I pull off the old seal, and have to navigate it around the boot lid?
It won't just pull off because the hinges are in the way if you see what I mean? It's a Spec D so has the WRX spoiler, but would I have to pull my new seal over the boot lid one end at a time?

I guess I could cut my old seal so it's easy to remove, but I can't see a way of fitting a new seal without taking off the hinges...it's tricky to explain, but if you open your boot you'll see what I mean.

Many Thanks,

I think I understand what you're trying to say. The seal does have some stretch to it or so I imagine so why not put your bootlid through the seal that way you won't have to remove the hinges.

Does that make sense

Not sure why you would need to cut it. just pull your boot lid down a tad and remove it, comes off quite easy. Have you thought about the light seals? Or you sure its the boot seal?

Only cut the old one and remove it.
The new seal will be one big loop effectively, so I think I will have to pull it over the boot to get it over and in where it needs to be....assuming there is enough stretch to get it over the boot lid...

Many Thanks,
The width plus depth of the boot opening is far greater than the width plus thickness of the bootlid..............If in doubt measure the opening around the boot seal with a piece of string, tie the ends together and see if it will slip over the boot lid.
The seal is not rigid

alternatively just loosen off the striker plate and knock it down a few mm which in turn will cause the bootlid to close/seal tighter. Had to do similiar on my old spec D

Spoilers and lights as mentioned above can leak too , try sourcing the leak with a hose pipe

Changing my rear boot seal and both rear light ones this week aswell ordered from icp months ago

ive also noticed some surface corrosion when taking the plastic panel off the centre 😢 so this will need attention

and to be honest it’ll be much easier to take the bootlid off 4 bolts and alittle plug

I’ve been advised not to use any sealant etc just clean surface properly and put the new seal on..?

Originally sealant wasn't used on the boot, don't use sealant on the lights just gasket and tighten, put some on my classic no leaks now. sealant was rubbish.

Have you checked the boot spoiler is firmly in place? My missus has a habit of using the spoiler as a handle and one of the studs has broken away at the fixing point on the spoiler, allowing water in. I've removed it and put rubber grommets in the holes in boot lid until I've repaired the spoiler.

Funny you should say that as I do same as your Mrs using the spoiler as a handle 😢 luckily nothings ever broken off yet...

luckily all studs and plastic thingies are all intact the seal itself was the culprit on mine
saying that being a 16 year old car it’s wear and tear I guess
