Default Turbo upgrade

Looking to upgrade my turbo in my 06 Sti, I was thinking a Garrett gtx3076r.
just wondering if anyone has changed to a Garrett or similar and could gives some feedback.
hoping to keep lag down and my engine block is all stock

Is it a 2.0 or 2.5, first of all?

Have a look at some dyno graphs of them on a 2.0

If not hitting full boost till top half of rev range isnt laggy, i dont know what is lol...

Peak torque well above 4k rpm on a motor that barely revs past 7 really.....

Such a terribly high boost threshold but transient responce when up there will be better due to being ball bearing type.

Folk split hairs and say not laggy because it has good transient responce but a terribly high boost threshold.

Floor it from 2k rpm and watch pretty much every performance car on the market drive away in the 5 secs it takes to spool & pull in everything but 1st & 2nd gear..

Then theres the issue of it revving faster than it builds boost in 1st & 2nd so even in those gears your prob better off in a stock turbo car....

What would you recommend I do then? leave it stock ? Or go smaller ?

Depends what u want reaponce or power

A good 400bhp one would be much better on road than a 500bhp one. if you ask me.

Tbh on a 2.5 you will need different pistons and rods to start with, and likely a closed deck insert as well 😔

i’m not into changing to a bigger turbo , bigger turbo more fuel used more stress on the engine etc not always quicker due to lag , mines a daily drive so i want to keep it slightly sensible 😁 , a friend did it on his Fsti and in his own words regretted it , part of his regret was the larger turbo and more boost killed his engine , more prone to piston failure on a 2.5 with the piston issues , the snippet i would add , if you want to go bigger , find a turbo that it’s max ish power matches the power you are looking for and fit that , the logic being the bigger turbo you fit , the more lag you get , there are also turbos out there ie twin scrolls etc that tend not to be as laggy , other options are hybrid turbos , the fsti comes with a small turbo but little lag , full boost is around 2200 rpm , and off the line due to the lack of lag it’s quicker than a similar spec sti , sorts cat down pipes help too
