Classic v5 Sti

Classic v5 Sti
Hi all,,, just wondering... I have the opportunity to buy a 99 sti jdm, the seller is local
but the car has been sat the last few years and has run down some what..
off the top of my head this is a list of things that would need doing
small 2p rust repair above one rear light
timing belt oil pump water pump aux belts
service / oils coolant plugs
new discs & pads all round
Tyres all need replacing as cracked
No mot
boot arial snapped
it’s been run down the last few years just sitting on his drive, gave a knock to see if he was interested
in selling but I was interested to to see what people think it’s worth in its current condition...
The closest I’ve seen is a v5 jdm Sti on eBay for £6.5 which seems really cheap the Catch is it’s a motorhub but the price
Just seems cheap I’ve seen good condition classic wrx’s going for £8k on eBay...
What would you pay in it’s current conditon ? As said it’s been sat a few years body work seems ok engine fires
up and sounds ok just if anything goes pop like the engine or clutch it’s gonna cost to get it back up to scratch
so a lot of risk on my part of I was to buy it so In two minds :/
Thanks CSF

I think there was a thread on the motorhub one, I think I even replied on there lol. That car was rough mate.
This one though all depends on what its priced at, prices are on the up and imports seem to be more expensive then cars that are already in the UK
With it being such an old car you will need to spend money on it. There are so many hidden rust areas which I'm sure you're aware of. It used to be ebay was the bench mark for prices/thats were they were often cheaper than anywhere else. However it now seems those cars are on FB. I'm not on there so can't give a more current price.
What are your intentions with it, break, quick sell or keep.
So back to your question what would I pay, I honestly don't know, I think these cars have now exceeded my price range

Hi Nossy thanks for the reply Yeh I figured the motorhub one would have issues as the price just
isn’t inline with current market value so must be something wrong with it.
my intentions where to get it up to a decent standard not modifying but get it back to standard and sell on but with the above work that needs to be done I was alittle sure on what I should be paying for it he originally wanted £6k I wanted to pay no more than
£4500 he has dropped to 5k after alittle drawn out negotiations.
I know we’re not far apart but I’m questioning if it’s still to much to pay. I appreciate the market and what There fetching but
it’s a lot of work and cash getting it to where it needs to be.
As I said in the original post I’m seeing wrx classic in good condition fetching 7-8k so was wondering what the good Condition
classics Sti’s are fetching.
I’ve had a reasonable look round the car and would need to go over it with a fine Comb prior to any purchase with regards to see
if any potential serious rust issues i mean it has sat for the last 3 years so is a concern.

That does seem like a really good price. If you do some of the work yourself it could keep costs down.
The thing is clean cars seem to command a very high price and you just aren't going to get it at that price point. When you do sell it make sure it goes to an enthusiast lol, these cars are getting rarer.

If it’s not rotten through it’s a good price.
Bodywork is very expensive though and you’re right in that a cheap car would be up there with the best fresh import with zero rust by the time you’ve got it sorted if it is rusty.
I guess it depends how much you really want one. People who do really want one would still jump at a £5k sti v5 that needs some work. What’s the alternative these days? £10k for a decent one that in reality probably still will need servicing properly and will no doubt have rubbish tyres. That £6500 one has to be a shed as it’s cheap and been for sale forever.
My mate bought a really nice (almost like new underneath) Evo of ff an importer with a supposedly superb name and it was supposed to have been fully serviced (inc AYC) & ready to go... He bought it unseen due to pics and reputation, delivered and... Misfired it’s **** off (spark plugs ancient and huge gap along with plug wells full of water) The oil filter was still some bizarre Jap brand, AYC fluid not done (I changed this for him)
The service and tyres stuff is a moot point to me at this age. It’s stuff you’ll need to keep doing anyway so I don’t begrudge that at costs. I wouldn’t trust anyone other than friends in the trade going off my mate’s experience dealing with a very expensive Evo which had ridiculous sales prep.

Once you’ve sorted it and assuming mileage isn’t astronomical you’ll be able to sell it for £12k+. Factor that into your calculations working out how much you need to pay in parts and anything you can’t do yourself, then the value of your own time.

mileage on this is a bonus has only 66000 on the clock and that could be a mixture so Milage is low. Most of the work I will do myself
unless is specialist like mapping if required.

a part in my pricing for the car as it was the only one I could find
really not many Sti classics on the market and as said they just seem to be
getting harder to find
