Once was and soon to be I hope!!!
Evening folks,
many many years ago I was once a Scooby owner a mica black sti on a 54 plate not that I am trying to get back in touch with that motor.
I am now on the hunt for a Scooby hatchback 2.5 STI.
on searching the web high and low majority on EBay I’ve come across a few which seem to have been modified to around 400bhp which is an aim of mine, with this in mind they have also now hit the 100k on mileage, if they have been looked after, serviced according etc etc should I be worried?
any comments or replies would be appreciated so I have piece of mind.
All the best and once covid is gone hope to be at a Scooby meet in the near future (if I find the one to buy!)

I'm in a similar position where i've been searching for a hatchback for a while, i'm leaning towards a JDM car because the equivelant UK car will have been subject to our climate and road salt for around 12 years, thats unless your lucky and you find one thats been fully forged, ideally closed decked and has been garaged and never been out in the wet.
The minimum on the 2.5 engine from my own reasearch is to buy one that has been forged by a reputable company, if you buy one that hasn't been forged it's a potential ticking time bomb with ringland and head gasket failures the most common, because of the design they also have oil issues where the oil doesn't get to everywhere it needs.
Do your homework, the JDM engine is the better engine by all accounts, i'd tread carefully with the 2.5 engine, you need a lot of luck to have one without issues and it will be pricey to put right if at some point it needs a rebuild.

Thanks all,
the ones I’ve seen are all forged either by Andy Forrest or Scoobyclinic.
I guess these would be promising...
my only worry is the fact that they are over 100k on the clock.

Also, at 100k miles, that's alot of wear on other components. It would have to be immaculate underneath and enthusiast owned for me, but most at that stage are multiple owner dogs. Some are incredibly rusty, as there wasn't alot of love for the hatch until recently.

Thanks again,
I really want the hatch, so need a forged engine if I’m buying modified by a rep company/ engine builder.
this will become my pride and joy, it will be garaged and well looked after for meets, and trips to caffeine and machine.

The only thing i didn't like about it is it was on 11mm head bolts, personally if i'd have gone to that expense of having it forged and closed decked i would have gone down the 14mm head bolt route which would cover you for further power which i'm sure a lot of people would have done.

I get what you're saying but all depends on power levels. Spending say £700 (machining, headstuds, labour etc) might not be recouped when you come to sell. The next buyer might want to keep it at the same level. Others might be put off. But wither way its a tough one.

Like I said mate I understand what you're saying
Something I saw on another thread and it really opened my eyes to mods people do. A guy had a semi forged build on a 2.5, no one could understand why they would do such a thing. Then one of the members on here said something along the lines of for his power goals semi forged was more than enough, from when it was built right the way through ownership and to the point he sold it. The fact it was semi forged and if the next owner wanted to up the power thats up to them. I understand that side of the argument too.Spending that extra probably wouldn't have seem him get much more on resale so if anything he was quids in when you look at it that way. But lets say it was a factory spec rebuilt 2.5 you would have been better to go forged. Its unanimous in that respect the 2.5 when rebuilt should be forged/semi forged.
Don't get me wrong it is often better to upspec but all depends on circumstances and item etc.
