Default How does road tax work ?

With a lack of threads on here these days i thought i'd post this one, i'm just curious how road tax works. My previous car was a 2018 BMW M2 which is a 3 litre, 6 cylinder twin scroll turbo, i think the price new on these was over 50K, the road tax was £490 for 12 months on that. I recently taxed a 2008 Sti 20th Anniversary hatchback, the road tax on that was £280 for 12 months, i've also just taxed a 2008 Sti hatchback which is a UK 2.5, the road tax on that was £585 for 12 months.

Why is it the UK 2.5 costs more in road tax than a BMW M2 which is valued at over 50K new, also why does the UK 2.5 cost over twice as much to tax than JDM 20th anniversary, is it purely an emmissions thing as i was under the impression that a car over a certain value which i think is around £40k you pay a premium/prestige tax which i think is £300 ish on top of your road tax, i was just suprised that the UK 2.5 is virtually £600 to tax for the year.

It's just basically a rip off.
Ahhh but wait... we must all go electric, pay £40k upwards for a car that whines. And then wait for battery range tax, increased electricity charging costs, battery disposal tax. And any other tax they feel like.

I work at a main car dealer, nothing huge, but big enough. We currently have 204 OLEV EV incentive grants set up on the system. 204 x £2500 = £510,000 and there will be more government grants set up on our system by the end of next week. I believe vans grants get £6,000 a pop, and lorries is £20,000 a pop.

My point being, that's just where I work, how much money is the government throwing at EV's??? - only to be clawed back (and then some) Beware, income tax and NI deductions hike coming our way soon!

I honestly think when they do a budget one year, that certain cars will rocket up by another £500 or £1000 a year for road tax. We won't be forced off the road, just taxed off the road. Many can afford it, most cannot.

UK STI - based on CO2 emissions

JDM STi probably registered as Private/Light goods (no emission figures quote upon UK registration)

Before 2006 the max tax CO2 category was band K...it didn't matter how much more CO2 the car produced it was still £300ish.

But 2006 onwards was when they introduced band L and M with a big jump to £600ish.

I found that after I bought a 2006 monaro and tried to tax it...I was like how much? just WTF?

When I bought my R32 there were four on the dealer forecourt, the clincher was one was a 2005, so that's the one I bought as whilst it was an identical car the year made it £300 a year cheaper to run just because of the tax being band K not M (DSG was band L iirc).

But to be honest, at its worst it's only £1.65 a day...just wish that was actually spent on building new roads and graded junctions and not faffing with putting traffic lights everywhere and this "smart motorway" crap (if there's an accident...all lanes get screwed regardless of how many lanes knocked out due to closures and rubber neckers etc.), we need new alternate roads to use...like France has.

My new shape Fsti jdm are as above shown as 0 emissions on import , the import paperwork if it’s from the right importer will show 0 emissions but some don’t show 0 emissions , one previous Fsti on a 05 showed emissions so tax was higher at around 340£ instead of 275£ , my ute aus import on a 2010 plate 6.2 litre with emissions shown , maybe because it’s a van is around 275£ , my monaro with emissions a 2004 so that’s 340£ , the three other fsti are 55 06 and 07 again tax is 275£ , uk car on a later 06 is 580£ again which is a lot , not the most economical cars made worse by having four wheel drive all the time , but i still would not have any other car till i have no option , dvla got it wrong on an 04 Fsti i was getting charged 580£ i contacted them it was put back to the 300£ or so area , as it’s based on date first registered not when registered with the dvla , yes car tax is overly complicated and not always easy and straight forward on some cars to confirm what tax you will pay , plus as above dvla making mistakes 👍
