Decoding/Identifying A Subaru GC8 Vin
Hey Guys,
Picked up a 1998 GC8 Subaru WRX today, has a big end bearing spin like the usually so wont be running for a bit. While im certain its just a wrx and not an sti, it has sti 0028/1000 and other sti little add ons as it were including couple of tanks etc. Havent taken the most thorough look by any means as it was so cheap today was just a case of picking it up and getting it home before dark.
The Vin Code Reads:
JF1GC8KD3WG029356
Now i found an old ScoobyNet Forum with a similar theme, they had identified that 17 digits meant non JAP SPEC and 16 digits meant JAP SPEC
While i was trying to find the identity of the car all the websites were telling me... Impreza. Now im not dumb and know that wrx and sti are all still imprezas, i was just expecting something to tell me SUBARU IMPREZA WRX but nothing did. Im now more worried ive picked up a diy Turbo Subaru impreza wanna be wrx. While ill fix her up and make her sweet again, i still dread thinking ive brought an impreza and not a wrx.
Just Wondering if anyone has any more knowledge on their vins etc.
Many Thanks in advance - Michael

Destination code KA - Australia
Model Year 1998
Grade - GT - Europe marketed as "GT"; UK marketed as "Turbo 2000"; Australia marketed as - "WRX"
List of Australian model "Special Editions"
https://subaru-impreza.de/SonderserienENG.htm#WRXRallye
Looks like someone may have "borrowed" a plaque from a limited JDM WRX STi ......
Further confirmation its just a WRX
