Default Boot torsion bar -2003 Sti

Hi all, I hope some of you may be able to help. Over the last 6 months I have noticed that when I open the boot the boot lid only opens about a cm, where previously it would open a good few inches. The torsion bar keeps the boot open but does not have the same force when opening. I have not changed anything on the car. Is this just a case of the torsion bar losing rigidity over time?

Has anyone else had this problem and can the bar be adjusted. Have had a good look at it and the bar is fully intact, no damage. Could it just need greasing on the contact points?

Any advice is appreciated as is a pain when trying to open the boot with stuff in your hands due to the weight of it with the Sti wing on.

Regards Ade

The Torsion barS (one left/one right) are sized to suit whatever is fitted (bootlid, bootlid +spoiler, etc) and are "unlikely" to loose their tension. Maybe just some lubrication needed.
A sod of a job to replace without the special tool or a home made version there of.

Thanks Don, will have a go and see if that helps. Really strange as the boot just started opening a little less each time until I really noticed there was a problem.

Have greased the bar and no improvement. Is really strange as holds the boot up but won’t lift the boot up like it used to the first part when you pull the boot release or open with the key????Will have another look tomorrow.

mine’s got the same issue - have to open with the key and simultaneously lift the boot lid.

It was weak already with the OEM wrx spoiler, but with a prodrive one there’s no chance

That would make sense - but mine has always been fine up until 6 months ago. Is really strange.

No, I mean mine was fine for years, and also became weak within a couple of months.

Ah ok, so we both having the same problem. Maybe it is just the age of the cars? Am going to have a look next week to see if I can fix it.

I would check the hinges (57520 in Dons part picture) as they have a habit of fatiguing and cracking where the torsion bar mounts into them.
