I've heard that the easiest way to reset the ECU is to disconnect the battery for 20mins.

Is this true?

Cheers

I heard it was half an hour. And it has to be over 30 minutes, a few seconds too little and it won't work (apparently!)

Can't be bothered with this myself!

Not looked at the link but I assume its the one about the black and green connectors behind the dash on the drivers side.

If it is......YES it works......YES you can do it, probably in about 5 minutes

Thumbs down

Just did the ECU reset...It does work! However my ECU flashed with a different sequence. Three flashes (1/2 second intervals), then two fast flashes...then a space then back to 3 flashes.
Does anyone know what this might mean? I have a problem with MY 95WRX, but since no-one has fault code reader in Scotland...WHAT CAN I DO!!!
Any help please!!!!!

Error 32, Oxygen sensor fault. Get it checked. Should be no problem for any garage boasting diagnostic skills. You could impress them by waltzing in and pointing straight to the problem

Steve,

Just noticed you're from Aberdeen! Try AW Autotech, 24 St. Peter St, Just off King Street. I have no vested interest in them but they have done diagnostic work for me in the past. I know how you feel right now, I phoned about a dozen "experts" in the Aberdeen area who couldn't promise to sort out my problem. Hope this helps,

Alan

It was simple.

Pay teenage son to clean inside of car.

Wait while interior light drains battery overnight.

Ask wife to charge battery while you use her car to get to work.

Drive gently for 100 miles or so.

and why would you ever want to do this? Never seen any concrete evidence that it does any good, seen all sorts of BS re adapting to driving style, SUL vs UL etc etc.

It works best on STis - reset ECU - car expects 100RON fuel, runs like a dog for 100 miles. Really worth it

It does work, and if you decide to use SUL in a UK car, it will enable the car to adapt more quickly - the ECU does adapt to fuel and environmental conditions; probably not driving style per se.

Are there any negative points about disconnecting the battery or resetting the ECU. i.e. Alarm/immobilser effects, Stereo presets, Mileometer effects etc.

Cheers

A guy from the AA adviced against doing this. You risk blowing your ECU flash memory.

On pre MY 99 its worth doing if you upgrade fuel to 97 from 95 ie MY98 backwards, My99 onwards there is no point as the ecu is "constantly" searching to optimise according to fuel and conditions. Also if persisitant problems are experience resetting can resolve if the ecu has glitched.

As far as how ... disconnecting the battery for 20 mins minimum will definately do it as the whole ecu is reset not just memory, its the way that I do it ... it really only takes a couple of mins to reprogram the head unit settings.

(thats not to say that the connector method does not work)
