I used to live in Houston (for my sins ). While over there I saw an oldish merc estate on UK plates (C reg, I think) so it can be done.
For 10K you'd probably get a 5/6year old Mustang, or something like that. Or a big pick-up .... .
You could try and find an Impreza 2.5 RS.
Edited to say you can get a 6 month business visa very easily (B1/B2), if you do need an extended stay.

Best fuel in the US is only 94 octane, where you can find it. Most gas stations have 87 (regular), 91 (premium) and 93 (super). I don't think your WRX would like it there ....

I was talking to somone on iwoc about this as was looking at a contract over there, they seemed fairly sure i could being my sti5 on a short term use basis (up to 12 months) and it would stay on uk plates etc.
After that period it has to come home, but you can't import them permanently.
(or you could import it as a competition car, but it has to be used as such).

Forget taking your car with you!
I am/was/maybe going over to the USA and was looking at taking the blackbeast with me (MY94 WRX Wagon, modified) and well, you can't. I won't pass the emmissions tests, and probably the crash tests.
I know Rich Squires has done a lot of looking into this, to get his 22B out there, but to no avail (correct me if I'm wrong Rich).
It would have been great to take the car out there and play with the vette's and other nice yank tanks, but alas, no can do.
One good point is that the yanks do now get the WRX, in turbo form so you could hire/rent/buy one when out there. not the same as having your own car, but, as close as you can get.

Cheers guys.
I won't be going out there for extended periods anymore, its too much hassle. I'd need some wierd thing to be able to stay more than 90 days (which I think is how long the visa lasts).
Anyway, I'll be going out there for 10days every 2months or so. Which is nice

I have a B1/B2 visa. It allows you to stay in the USA but NOT to work for a company that pays you in the USA, you have to be a UK employed person.
You can take a car for upto 12 months, but then it has to be exported or crushed. A lot of the rally boys export and re-import their cars every 12 months!

jf,
Thanks for the info on RON vs MON. Having delved a bit further (ref. http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/fuels/bulletin/motorgas/ch1a.shtml), the numbers on US pumps are actually the Anti-Knock Index (AKI) numbers, calculated from the equation (RON+MON)/2 so, as RON is always greater than MON, the equivalent RON value of US pump fuel will still be less than is available in the UK.
