How not to go on holiday
#1
This sounds a little like the problems that caused cylinder no3's to go bang a while back. Do you know if it was No3 that went through the engine block.
The situation in common(as I recall) was a prolonged period of running at maximum speed and then slowing down causing oil breakdown/starvation.
I can't recall the thread in drivetrain that discussed it, only that it was one of the best SN technical threads ever

Why did the engine blow up?...was it very old?...have you put the wrong fuel in?...has it done 300,000+ miles?..is it an import?...was it heavily tuned?...I thought Subaru engines were known for their reliability?...any more info?..I dont want to invest 10's of thousands of pounds in a performance car that blows up!!

First message from the mainland:
At 154 miles per hour everything went smoothly. Then we slowed down to about 110 mph and after about 10 -15 minutes all those 250 horses went through the metal cage which they call engine.
To cut the long story sjort we had to buy a new engine and wasted 4 days in Germany awating repairs.
Now what a fun doing 60 mph on the motorway trying to run the new engine in, lorries over taking us at high speed
We only laugh and say to each other : OVER TAKE WHILE YOU CAN.
Tommorrow we are getting oil change and as we broke our 700 miles barrier we'll be flying again
Who can beat our story.
Anyway we send all our regards to everyone back home, we are thinking of you while drinking cheap beer and loads of fatty food

well we are dissaponted that subaru didn't last that well in high speed even though it is a high performance car
but the holiday is going great now as we're drinking a lot and eating even more, or is it other way around
btw today we could spin the rpm higher then just 3k and thats what we were waiting for

Guys,
Real sorry to hear that!!! Hope the rest of the holiday goes without hitch and that you enjoy the rest......
I would give it more than 700 miles before thrashing though, just increase the revs by a few hundered rpm every hundred miles. (Just finished running in the STi today so I know how you feel in that department ).
Safe journey home,
See ya soon,
Matt

Well we are now back, the rest of the holiday was great, really enjoyed it. The car is now good as well.
We are only left with memories, good and bad ones. And with a hole in our wallet.
Thanks for your support and hope to see you soon again
