Driving with no insurance
#1
I`ve just read in our local paper a guy was stopped by the police & was found to be driving without motor insurance.
He was fined £115 + £35 costs
I dont think I`ll bother getting my car or bike insured next year, even if I get caught I`ll save ten years premiums. No wonder people dont bother getting insurance
Impreza turbo insurance- £700
No insurance Fine- £150
Its worth the risk, when did you last get a producer??
we are all SUCKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the way I AM going to get insurance for my car & bike so don`t be slagging me off, I AM NOT STUPID cos over £20k`s worth of toys is a lot of cash to leave uninsured and I do know a guy who was involved in a fatality of a pedestrian so don`t come preaching to me, but I`m sure you can see my point- young lad buys a cossie, RS turbo etc etc then gets the quote & thinks "THATS WHAT I PAID FOR THE CAR" so bugger it I won`t bother, its only a bit of paper I might not need" It might not be right but it goes on when you can buy a fast motor for a couple of grand.
It pisses me off when, as a law abiding(ish) citizen of this country I see criminals being lightly punished & us getting hammered. As if a £150 fine is going to bother a guy like him, he probably has`nt got a driving licence to put points on.
As for it being the thin edge of the wedge I couldn`t agree more.

what happens if u kill or injure someone in an accident and your to blame? would you be sued and lose everything? what happens if your motors nicked? who would pay?
i totally agree with what your saying, but i wont do something i'm totally opposed to.
jail the *******, they'll soon cough up. personally, i think this govt. is gutless and feeble. bring in some tough rules and stick to it. and whatever happened to morals?
this country is in decline, morally. the lazy and feeble rewarded, the workers, grafters and decent sorts punished, coz theyre easy targets. one day, and it may be some time, there will be a govt that says enough is enough, hang em all. strong stuff over insurance? nah, not really. thin end of the wedge isnt it?

Try to drag up at least one brain cell from somewhere....when you smash into someone else and turn them into a quadraplegic and you don't have an insurance company to pay their £1 million medical/compensation bill.....hopefully you can work the rest out for yourself

Oh, and there are an estimated one million uninsured drivers on the roads today - which puts EVERYONE that does buy insurance's premiums up by at least £60 per year. That's nice and selfish.
One of my friends was knocked off his motorcycle by a drunk uninsured car driver who then fled the country.....
My friend eventually got compensated by the MIB, however it took about five years to get paid, and in any case he nearly died, was off work for six months, and despite it being 16 years ago he still does not have proper use of one arm. He was about 25 when it happened, so the best bit of his life has been ruined.
Clearly the people that drive with no insurance have very low morals and are totally unable to think of the potential consequences or, for that matter, think of anybody but themselves. They probably smoke and drink and drive as well....

And please have the decency not to go back and edit your original post so it reads something else after people have replied. If you didn't mean it, don't post it in the first place.

Before this gets out of hand, I do totally understand what you are saying, but dragging ourselves down to the level of those that drive uninsured is not the answer.
The penalties should be much higher - but catching a speeder on a deserted dual carriageway is probably a preferred option.

My wife who has driven company cars for years but gave up work to look after our newly born children...well we figured we could afford to buy a fiesta to assist with the transport after a couple of years..quote £1100 for a 1.0 micra. We got a better quote eventually but I pay every tax under the sun and every insurance....what else can I say..welcome to modern Britain. If you abide by the law great if you don't....Great message isn't it

Ok then.
Of course I didn`t mean it about not being insured you fool. I`m sure that a lot of people, including yourself, have had or know about friends or relatives who have been injured or killed when hit by an inisured driver. As you can tell by my post It really annoys me that people can get away with it so lightly and so used a little sarcasm to put my point across. So as Spudgun did put your point across without directly insulting me please then at least I know you have a point without assuming you are a gobs****.

If you feel so strongly about it, why not do something POSITIVE about the problem and become a magistrate or a politician, or lobby the government for an alternative or something?

sorry to hijack the Dave T-S thread but ...
Big Lee has a very valid point (whether edited or not). If you are a (relatively) law abiding person, paying your taxes, national insurance, no CCJs, reasonable credit risk, decent job, supporting society etc. etc. you get shafted left, right and centre. Massive duty on fuel, higher insurance premiums, entrapment speeding fines - the list goes on.
However, if you are a slimey ****, with no job (but get state benefit), steal from others to feed your need, drive without tax, MOT or insurance - probably in someone elses car, have a total disregard for the rules of society; and yet the most you get is a slap on the wrist (if you are ever caught)!
As insurance, even in it's most basic form, has to cover third party risks, how about recovering from those who chose to avoid such payments, sufficient surety to cover a written-off Ferrari or similar. If they can't cover that amount, a jail sentence amounting to the number of days to earn said amount should then apply!!!
As for GBP115 plus costs - total ****!!!

Well if any of you have ever been hit by an uninsured driver (and he was also disqualified too) you may take pity on this story!
Id just gone and purchased a lovely 1996 306 gti-6 (back in 97) it was great, more torque than my r19 16v id traded in for it, id just got use to driving it too! airbags n all and it was soooooooooooo lovely, all 2.5 hrs i had it before some g1t ran a red light and spattered it big style drivers side of course, airbag was nice, pretensioner hurt but not as bad as the whiplash as he hit me at about 40mph as i was turning right (t junction, big fence to the right thus the reason its controlled by lights) and mine had been on green for ages!!! 16k car rather spattered guy runs off, me shouting profanaties cos hes just wasted me and all i can see is lots of fluids from under me new car i walked away though, the car cost 7.5k to repair and it took 2 years to recover my losses from the motor insurance people..... took me 3 years to recover from the injuries to me back, and even now they aint perfect, even after all the physio
They should be jailed, for atleast 3 years, have any belongings taken from them and sold to pay the 3rd party, have pictures in the paper saying what they have done, be totally shamed and let it ruin their lives like it ruined mine for 3 years.....
bitter and twisted, yup, 115quid aint nowt, not even a days pay

God forbid this happening, but if this case scenario became a reality, what would be the likely outcome for a/the victim and b/the perpetrator?

What the govt. should do:
Anyone caught drving without insurance should be fined LARGE amounts of money then banned , the govt. should the take the money and reduce the price of fuel.
Just a thought.

Why not make the fine triple what the insurance premium should be, as a minimum? As these posts point out, it's ridiculously imbalanced. Even without the threat of jail, non-insured drivers would think twice about a £4-5K fine.
Oh, and another story from Ceefax recently: a 66 year old lay preacher in Wales was stopped & done for having no MOT and no insurance. His defence? "God would protect him from accidents". His fine? £150 plus £50 costs. All true, I'm afraid to say.

What i dont get is why someone cant tie in the DVLA records on cars on the road to insurance for the owners.
I work in IT - specialise in databases, and it would be a simple job of saying "print all where insurance = no yet DVLA says car registered" if you follow me.
The DVLA could then issue letters to car owners without insurance / tax. Should clean the roads of abandoned vehicles at the same time.
Some ones gotta do something - its a joke!!

Just because the car was insured it wouldn't follow that the person driving was e.g turbos example.
Simple IMO, big fine and confiscate the car. Wouldn't be quite so ready to let his son have the car then.

My wife works in a solicitor's. I have often tackled her about these apparent injustices to decent living people......her answer....well most of these people are complete misfits....they live on benefits from the state, they have no real money/assets....they probably have been in trouble with the law many times before and fined x hundreds of pounds which they cannot pay....why fine them even more x hundreds of pounds which the courts KNOW they cannot possibly pay...SO:- Should their benefits be increased to pay their fines ??? ....or should they chucked in jail....most have already been inside jail or young offenders institutions before ....what do you do??? What else CAN the magistrates or courts do to these people to make them see sense...most have no morals anyway........just what CAN you do thats legal and still give them the rights to live a barely decent life on benefits???
All IMHO - I do not like this situation but thats just they way of this country at the mo....the civil liberties people ruled out physical punishment...but would even that help......Please Discuss.....

The PNC is about to be linked to a central insurer database that will show if a vehicle is insured or not.
Dr Hu's point is a good one, the problem then turns another corner to being a social/education issue.....chuck em in jail and that's another £500 or more per week to house them coming out of the taxpayers' pocket...

You could make offenders do x hours of work in their local casualty department so they see the effects of road smashes......but someone has to police this - more cost etc.

I did put an X in a box, so I have every right to complain about the govenment! And no I didn't vote Labour!
That said, the move for the insurance companies working with the police force to cross reference cars with insurance details is a good move.
Hopefully stop a lot of the tw@ts driving around with insurance.
I know exactly what Lee is saying, the penalty for the crime is not enough to prevent it.
Some git steals your car, drives it at 130mph, getting chased by the police, and gets put in a 'holiday camp' and taught how to 'fix' cars.
If we do 85mph, we get kicked in the nuts!
Anyway, with 'Zero Tolerance' and cracking down on speeding, etc. Fines and points for a couple of miles over the speed limit, who is going to ensure that all cars have calibrated speedos??? If you speedo misreads, and you honestly want to do 70mph, yet get caught doing 75mph, will you still be crucified by the police/govenment/gits!
Sorry rant over. Just hit a couple of topics that presses my buttons!!!

Got a ban/fine for speeding. Whilst in court nasty little gobsh1te no insurance £150 fine + £35 costs.
I got 6 month ban and £2500 fine for speeding (I was going quite quickly on an empty motorway at 1am)
My solicitor recomended that I did not fill in the means test, as the magistrates could not imagine earning as much as me (I work in London but live in Devon), so the fine would be lower (it could have been more) The above mentioned Gobsh1te was obviosly on benifits...
OK I fully accept I was wrong for speeding, the court jester (sorry clerk) was trying to get a custodial for dangerous driving on me!!! (He failed.) Yet this nasty little gobsh1te with no insurance paid his £150 in cash and walked away...
Somebody please explain this twisted justice to me.

It isn't always Max Power boys and benefits claimants that drive with no insurance ... like anything else, there are just as many "respectable" people who aren't covered. Old codgers in bangers, housewives not fully insured for hubby's Range Rover, that sort of thing.
Basically, if caught with no insurance, big fine. If no insurance and involved in an accident (whether caused or not) then ban and possible custodial sentence.

When I lived in Italy, I think I am correct in saying that, the current tax, insurance and MOT were displayed in the windscreen.
So any passing copper sorry Polizia could check and fine very easily.
I think we should do it here and make life more difficult for the scum who pass all the cost of their social irresponsibility on to us types who pay our dues.
And I do have a driving license with photo on as I belive this will cut down on car crime fraud when everybody has one.

Driving through town on Saturday I spotted a guy from work driving his dads car . I knew he had no driving licence , not even an 'L' , and therefore wasn't insured . I tackled him at work on Monday about it ( I had just forked out £675 for my insurance so was a bit peeved ) . I pointed out the fact that if he gets caught and done for no insurance or licence and that he would have trouble ever getting insurance but it didn't seem to worry him . His dad said if he gets caught he'll say that he didn't give permission for him to take the car so he'll get done for stealing a car . There is no reason why he can't take his driving test .
