Could be less lag than expected as the UK turbocharger is smaller than the Japanese ones?
If this is the case, it may be better to go for a different ECU before changing the turbocharger.
Not telling you what to do, just putting my thoughts on the thread.

Bajie.
I'm sure that's one of the main reasons for the ralatively small amount of lag.
If/when I decide to upgrade further I would certainly get the ecu done before or at the same time as the turbo, as I believe there'd be a risk of running lean otherwise.

Congratulations Stef,
I like it.
Looks fantastic. Looks very mean from the front. In IMHO the black hoses look spot on. They look like they are there to do business, no mucking around.
18 hp gain to the wheels is very impressive considering you still have the stock turbo. Don't look at flywheel power converted from a RR that measures power at wheels, as it's confusing, only look at power at wheels. The only way to look at flywheel power is with an engine dyno and not a mathematical formula a RR uses. And I think you're going the best way about it, step at a time with power runs to see the gains after each step. If the turbo had also been swapped you wouldn't have known the gains obtained with each separately.
Glad it feels strong on the road as that is the real world.

Great - thanks for taking the time to do all that. I'll have to investigate prices now One question, if I can - what happens to the dump valve? Is the standard recirculating one retained? And while I'm at it, how resistant is the core to stones and other rubbish off the road? Is there a guard available? That's three questions now Glad you're pleased with the job.

This might be a stupid question but why didnt you just sell CK1 and buy an STi or equivilent if you wanted more power. Surely that would have been the cheaper and more reliable route for extra horses?

I had a friend in Australia installed a Hyperflow FMIC to his Rex.
But I am interested to know more about the roll cage you have there. What is the brand of that roll cage you have there? Do they have a website? Is it removable?

Stef you nugget - why didnt you measure the peak inlet temps before and after fitting instead of the guestimations off the rollers at the flywheel!

I had it fitted for a number of reasons.
Firstly, it lowers the intake temp which offers a better safety margin for the car.
Then, there aren't that many Scoobs around with a fmic and it adds to the individuality of CK1.
Oh, it also gives more power, which is nice.
It probably isn't the best bhp/£ mod you can buy on it's own, but is the next step towards more reliable horses.
The number plate will probably restrict airflow to some degree, but not by anything that I'd probably notice at the moment. It made no difference on the rolling road anyway.
As I've said, the scoop is no longer required for it's current function, but I'm undecided what to do about it.

I have retained the standard dump valve at the moment, but one thing I have noticed is a slight surge in the power when I lift off. After doing some investigating it appears this is caused by the turbo back-spinning and that an uprated dump-valve would cure this. I don't like the noise of an atmos one, so have ordered an uprated re-circ one which will be fitted asap.

The K&N is slightly smothered by the pipes, but in the engine bay that's probably a good thing! I have actually run a large ducting pipe from the gap under the left indicator in the bumper up to the hole in the wing near the filter, forcing a large amount of air directly onto it. I'll take a picci tomorrow.

I don't know how you come to the conclusion that STi's are more reliable either!
At the end of the day I like CK1.
STi's are expected to be quick, I prefer the stealth approach.

As has already been pointed out, the cage is sold by Performance Drivers. Once the main struts are fitted to the car (45mins) the cage can be removed/installed in about 10mins, leaving the car completely useable in the rear.
The one you see is currently the only one in existence as it was the prototype. Production has now started and orders are coming in from all over the world.

One thing I forgot to mention was the fact that since fitting the fmic the exhaust note has become throatier. It's not me, there's a definite difference. Dunno how or why but there is.
It also pops and bangs like a super-duper-trouper now too, which is nice.

I assume that a standard STi would be more reliable that a tuned UK version as from what I gather Scoobies are built to provide X amount of power. So if yours is built to run 200ish and an STi 280ish then surely a standard STi would be more reliable than yours tuned to 270ish???

I guess if they're mapped (well) for UK fuel then you have more potential with an STi.
I don't want a silly powered car though. 280bhp would be nice.

couple of things. do you have rpm figures for peak torque and peak bhp ?
what boost level were the before and after ? did the bigger intercooler cause any boost rise ( theoretically it should )
also it would have been good to see the CO levels .

Congratulations, the car looks awesomely mean and for what it's worth I think you're going about modding the car in the right direction, for reliable horse power the fmic rates up at the top which is probably why just about every high power modded scooby in japan has one.
I told you lag wasn't what people made it out to be...it's merely a slight delay in throttle response. Like you, I fitted the fmic when still running with the std turbo and like you say..on the road it just pulls and pulls.
My only concern was that the small turbine would be spinning its nuts off to make the same boost at the manifold, so the signals going back to the map sensor will be telling the ecu that it hasn't made its pre programmed boost yet causing the turbo to spin harder hence more heat. So this warranted a good excuse for a turbo change. This is where you'll really notice a big hike in power.
The surge you mention is pretty much a characteristic of running an fmic as there is that much more volume of pressurised air in the system. If you fit a larger turbo this will be even more noticeable..especially if you back of midway and then re-nail the throttle- you'll get a bit of a surge in boost. I find the evc deals with this very well considering since it reacts much quicker than the factory boost solenoid.
Anyway..well done..it really is looking good!

Stef did you contemplate having an Oil cooler fitted whilst the front was off. just seemed like a good opportunity to get one on with her nose off?
