I also noticed a lot of the cars running Dunlop Sport R tyres.. Where do you get them? Im sure that they are not exactly a road tyre, although they may be road legal. Looked to be very grippy though.
Im sure it would be possible for a subaru to break the 180mph though, which all things considered, isnt too unrealistic. Thats not that much less than the skylines which do have a lot more power. 8000 in 5th with 4.44 and 225/45x17 should see about 178mph. Perhaps it may not quite be as easy to manage it in the distance given though. The legacy only did 158.6mph, but he lifted before the line, as he thought he heard something wrong. It turned out that we think it was a chrome strip above the windscreen coming off, as its no longer on the car. I also think that the legacy would be a slightly more aerodynamic car, for top speed runs, but we still need more power.

Fantastic day chris! Some amazing cars there!

My time was 33.67s on the handling circuit so i beat the fisher fury. LOL Not bad for a standard STi5 TypeRA.

John: At the end you had a 33.04 and I think the 33.67 was the run where you spun backwards through the timing gear. Amazing times, allthe more so from a standard RA...and coming through backwards...well??? with no time loss.

Question

Awesome day, blindingly quick cars

This needs to be run more often, just one question though which is really bugging me....

Why oh why oh why oh why!!! was the run over 500M ???!?!?!?

It just doesn't make sense, I mean, a 1/4 mile is near enough 400M isn't it? Which would make the times much more comparable in the real world

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, it just seems so.....weird ?

Seriously hoping there is gonna be another of these soon

So basically not one Subaru won anything??

Maybe you're driving the wrong motors??

Exclamation

I though a 0-500m was set rather than 1/4 mile, as some of the people with cars such as Porsches, Skylines, etc, etc, didn't want to get shown up by Evos, Subarus, etc!

Shame really!

Chris

Just like to add my thanks for providing a nice big safe area for me to hoon around in

The guys running it must've got fed up of seeing me keep turning up Thanks to them too

At one point, I was the only bugger on it & just kept doing lap after lap Actually allowed the brakes time to warm up - but the clutch started to smell a bit. Ran out of tyres too

As can be shown from my pathetic showing over the 500m, I'm not a straightline car & never professed to be, but I beat a Skyline

Once again, many thanks for organising it all & putting up with us lot. I hope that you enjoyed it to.

Rik

Its not the winning, but the taking part Besides, JF won a nice cup and a strut-brace - b'stard

The 500m is because that is apparently the new RAC recognised short sprint distance and also recognised for world records etc - or some such reason.

500m is the guiness world record distance.

No scoob was ever going to win on the drag runs to 500m, 1.2 miles. The skylines are just too powerful with their much larger capacity and stronger engines. The only scoob capable of beating them to 500m would be marks IMHO, but he hasnt even had a week with the engine in the car yet.

Scoob's stand best chance on the handling circuit, which is what scoobs are all about really. Considering i have a pretty standard car, i think being 0.04 seconds behind the 580BHP EVO and just 1.14 behind the fastest car of Gareth Lloyd is pretty good. I think with decent suspension and R spec tyres, even with a stock engine my TypeRA has a chance of winning that part of the event next time.

John

If we get an event like this again, prehaps we should swap cars? See what the differences are!

Should've done that for a few trips on Sunday...

Yep, i agree James, that would have been very interesting! I thought you drove incredibly well! i was worried for a while.

It would have been easier to be more spectacular if the track was set out wider. Still have the tight corners in places to keep the speed to a sensible level, but have the cones much wider. That way i could have been much more agresive with power slides on exit and maybe even got away with handbraking it to set up a long drift.

The course was very much autotest type tightness in two places, i think for this type of event just opening that up a bit more would be fantastic for the cameras and the types of cars running.

Still a fabulous fun course though.

Thanks Scott.

I would have been chuffed to get as close to Gareth as i did even if i was driving his car as he is one seriously quick driver. Gareth has won the Formula Saloons championship and the Ace Vehicles Deliveries Championship outright, plus his class in the Nurburgring 24hr race, he is bloody good!

I dont want to knock anyones times, but I dont really think that a short handling circuit would really show the best for the big power cars. Turbo lag would be a major problem. Did you see the size of those bloody things???????????

It was pretty much real world road speeds though, which i think was part of the design thinking there as this was a competition for road legal cars, not race cars.

I was hitting 85MPH into the last corner braking point.

A subaru will never win the top speed runs, unless someone decides to run the gearing to do it.

The Highest I saw on the clock, was 7500rpm in 5th (170mph approx, based on gearing) but the car was missfiring so badly due to the massive overfuelling, that I had to lift off, well before I could even see the 1.3mile timing gate.

All things considered, I was very happy with the results. I only got the car back Fri' night, I've not driven a Scoob in anger for nearly a year, and the car was running like a pile of sh*te, compared to how it will go, when the mapping has been addressed.

13th overall, in that company, with a car that was being mapped inbetween the 3 runs..... next year

For all those who think the Scoobs did poorly in the sprints, wait until the full results are posted, and then compare the times.

Mark.

Yup - gotta agree that its not all about straightline go. The best thing would've been an amalgamation of straightline + handling, so Lloyd would've won Guess much more complicated

I was contemplating a change to 4th sometimes to see if that had any impact as it was near the limiter before the breaking point last corner.

BTW John, were you using the black cone as a break point? I tried to ignore it & go further, but it was like a bloody magnet to the brake peddle! Also found that there was a wider black concrete break in line before that last corner & a couple of times the back-end skipped out as I went over it

I wasnt using any cones for braking, as they can get moved. I find it's safer to use something on the track surface as a reference point. I was using a black piece of **** as a basic reference, although almost every lap i tried something new with the lines and braking points to see what would work. My last run sort of tied together all the small gains i was making by experimenting on the previous runs.

The funny thing is, the one lap they rigged me for a camera head shot i went off at the first proper corner, made a right pigs ear of it so no doubt will look a **** on the video. LOL

I did have a craking wet run with the camera running though, i hope they use that as it should show how you can drag the car through a corner using the front diff, you should have heard the centre diff giving it some on the first left hander, talk about agressive!

The R rated tyres were worth some time i would think, how much i am not so sure on a sprint circuit.

We cant really compare gears used, i was doing 8100rpm in 3rd at the braking point.

My car is geared to do 175 true mph ( 24.something mph per 1000rpm * 7.4rpm)

But it will never bloody do it because of that great big thing on the back 150mph @ 6000rpm is my limit give me 400bhp

Scott
