Question

Hello,

Im in the final stages of purchasing a MY97 Turbo and ive just found out the following.

At one stage the engine had a UNICHIP ECU remap.

I am told that this has now been removed. Is this possible and is there anyway I can verify that this is the case?

Also an Induction Kit had been on the car in the past, how can I check that this is off as well.

I may favour these mods later in my scooby life but not for my first one!

Any help/advice would be appreciated,

Kev

Induction kit is a doddle to identify if it has been removed, you should have a big black plastic box on the drivers side wing, with a large diameter plastic pipe coming off the back end, with an electrical connection on it ! If this isnt there or there is a pipe with a conical air filter connected directly to the end of it the induction kit is still on it !

AFAIK the unichip is removable, but the only way to know would be to look at the ECU, i have no idea what a Unichip looks like, but as i understand it, it is a piggy back board on the standard ECU ! (i may be wrong about this though)

Allegedly - that's why the cost of a MY01 PPP is only £1600 as opposed to the MY00 and earlier ones that were much more - Prodrive don't ship a new ECU in from Japan, they just chip the existing one.....

you must get something else. You don't pay £1600 for a 30 pence chip.

Whatever bits go in the ECU, a bit of intercooler piping, exhaust backbox and one of the two centre sections. That's it!

I think there is more to it than just the chip....exhaust + intercooler piping mods- what ever thy are? The important issue is that this DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR 3 YEAR WARRANTY sorry for shouting. Believe me that is the major issue here. If it goes bang and from personnal experience they sometimes do £1600 was cheap cheap cheap!

I thought the Unichip was a box that intercepts two wires from the ECU.

So although it is considered a piggyback chip, where you would assume you'd have to dismantle the ECU casing to see if it's gone. I thought it was a black box that sits external to the ECU intercepting the loom.

The ECU is located under the carpet in the passenger footwell, and it's prtected by a metal plate held on by a few bolts. (10mm)

I could be wrong, but I'm sure a Unichip owner will correct me.

Here's a picture of what your engine bay should look like if you've got the standard air box:

And this is a K&N induction kit fitted:

Hope this helps!

Andy is correct, I'm not an owner but have seen them fitted in OZ. It is a seperate box external to the ECU and they usually fit it in the kick panel of the passenger side with the wiring going under the carpet and metal plate protector to the ECU. There is a pic here of what it looks like and some info too.
