I doesn't surprise me to hear that the article appears balanced, as Jethro seemed to be a very competent young guy. Even the other Evo staff were most complimentary about him, despite his being a 'new boy'

That said, he was extremely diplomatic on the day, declining to commit himself. Tricky little sod

To quote from this issue of Autocar for the WRX 0-100

"the technique with the Subaru is brutal. It feels like murder but the only way is to bring the engine up to maximum revs and then sideslip the clutch. Harsh but effective"

And as quoted in the 0-100 of the STi

"Death off the line is the only way to extract the maximum" "either clutch or the gearbox is a potential victim"

Tenths of seconds, half stars, who cares in the real world.

Got my copy this morning. Have to say its a quite disappointing and lacking in depth write up. They use the usual overexagerations as always.

They give the following stars

P1 5 stars
RB5 WR 5 stars
New STI 4.5 stars
UK300 PPP 4.5 stars

The disapointment for me is no full EPR and performance figure tests. The UK300 for example is given at 0-60 in 5.8 secs. Autocar get better than that in a std car.
I realise its dificult to do a full EPR, as they had to use customer cars, but all the same. They are also comparing well run in P1's and RB5's vs new cars with tight engines.

Whilst ultimatley I agree with their ratings in the EVO sense - even though a drive a UK300 . These guys dont have to live with the cars on a daily basis as their main cars.

There, there, Jonathan. It's only a magazine. You made a wise choice when parting with your P1 to get a UK300, honest.
Ok, so you've lost half a star and gained a few pounds, but don't we all.

Josh.

Stef

Problem is when I gain a few pounds, I gain a new chin as well .

And for all those that said EVO mag was under the influence of Subaru UK, go eat your words boys.

This months mags has some other great tests done in much greater depth. I'd just like to see a mega EPR test of Scoobies. Stef you could probably get a sport to 60 quicker than EVO get a WRX.

Hehehe

Out of interest, once I get the Link fitted and get rid of that 'orrible turbo up-pipe cat, i'm going to offer my MY01 to the mags to see how a modded '01 compares when they do the next group Impreza test.....

Agree with Jonathan, in that its a balanced article as far as it goes, but a proper EPR test would be of more interest.
It seems a lot of people say the MY01 needs 4-5000 miles to loosen up, so maybe they should be doing it in 6 months time or so to be on an even field.

Its also true that there are lies, damn lies, and statistics. The Autocar figures (60 in 5.7, 100 in 17.03) are much better than evos EPR test (100 in 18.3), and also Evos UK300PPP (60 in 5.8, 100 in 16.6)

But at the end of the day how important are a bunch of numbers anyway as long as you are happy with your car?

My point with the performance figures for the UK300 is that they actually have not tested the car. Whenever EVO do a proper test they publish all the increments and in gear figures. It looks to all intense and purpose that they have guessed the numbers against their own WRX figures.

Also they say the STI VII tops out at 140 and the UK 300 145

Over the last few months EVO has proclaimed its EPR tests, and us Scooby lovers have had to watch as they use a std WRX in their big shootout.

I for one would love to see how the P1 stacks up against the all the other cars they used in their big test. It would also be nice to see how it fares against the new STI and to an extent the WRX PPP. They were happy to use an EVO VI Mak in their test but no P1

I've read the artical today and it seems that it's not to do with ultimate speed, we all know they are fast but about how they made the driver 'feel'. with the wrx's there were good points and bad points, but a lot less bab points when it came to the RB5 and P1. Enjoy what you drive, UK300, RB5, P1, WRX, STi, because to us they are all winners in there own right.

In this weeks autocar they put an EVO VII against an STi and the EVO beats the STi from 0-100-0.
And the new M3 beats the EVO so imagine if the M3 had been against an impreza it would of been very embarrasing.

Being a bit of a spotter. The STI was actually quicker, it was the reaction time from hitting 100 to hitting the brakes in the STI that made it slower.

Chins,

I'm not so sure about not testing the UK300, as I seem to recall they said they'd been up at MIRA with it all the previous day, and one of the doors bore scars from the timing equipment.

What I find interesting is this:

Evo quote the following power/weight ratios based on manufacturer's power figures, and the following 0-100mph times:

RB5 - 195bhp/tonne - 14.1 secs
P1 - 216Bhp/tonne - 13.3 secs
Sti 7 - 196bhp/tonne - 13 secs.

Right, obviously the power/weight ratio is key in those times, but also the type of start, gearing, and to a less extent aerodynamics (not THAT important up to 100mph). Also, I refuse to believe that the Sti's gearing would allow it to get to 100 faster than the P1 when it has a 20Bhp/tonne disadvantage. So, is this the confirmation we are looking for that Subaru is definately telling porkies about the Sti's power figures? Or is it attributable to the extra 15lbs/ft it has over the P1 (even thought torque to weight ratio is about 8lbs/ft down on the P1 by my calculations)?

All very interesting I think....

What do you lot think?

Mike

According to importers of new STi's they have around 310bhp, which would give it about 221bhp/tonne.

All this talk of the std STI and even Skyline with over 300 bhp is IMHO journalistic crap.

Some of the older members of IWOC/BBS will remember we had the same comments over 2 years ago when the first STI's and 22B's came into the country. The 22B was reputed to give 330bhp. Thats one of the reasons I did the first rolling road sessions. In the end 280 bhp was pretty spot on for the std STI and 22B.

I cant see what Subaru have done to the new age car to make it over the 300bhp. Performance figure wise it is 1 sec down to 100 over the P1/STI. This should pretty much be down to the extra weight.

Happy to be proved wrong

Aye Chins, but Evo timed the Sti7 as quicker to 100 than the P1. Hence my post, as I know that we are always debating whether they produce more than the Japanese limit or not. I just thought the article may imply that the Sti7 does have over 276Bhp. Someone will no doubt do an RR on one once enough bbs members have one.
