New STi or P1 dilemma
#1
I am currently pondering over the replacement of my 98 Turbo with either a new STi or a P1.
Can anyone help me make up my mind as I am finding the decision a tricky one.

I don't think you'll find it an easy question to ask people: a lot will be down to personal preference.
For starters, the P1 is a 2 door, and a 2 door only. New V7 STI is 4 or 5 door but never 2 door
Next up, how important is dealer support and warranty to you?
Are you wanting to compare the performance of each car, and purely that?
Evo have a review of the P1 vs V7 STI vs UK300 vs RB5. They prefer the P1...
Read that review would be my advice, then decide what you want from the car.

Tricky...
But the points that'd swing it for me are:
P1 has better ride on UK roads,
Best run on Super unleaded but can be safely run on normal unleaded?
Dealer/prodrive warranties,
Looks better!
(Shame you can't pick your own colour though)

I was in the same situation 3 weeks ago. Fed up with MY99 wanted more oomph. Always loved 3 door - but thought the new technology of the 01 would make the "old" shape redundant. Drove both std wrx and p1. Bought a P1. No contest. Put the smile back on my face straight away. Cars in for it's 1000 mile service today. Can't wait to give it a bit of stick over the next few weeks
Haven't driven a wrx sti, but I considered a UK warranty to be a must have ( as I've had a dodgy 3rd party warranty before)
After reading EVO today, I think I made the right choice. It is however a personal thing as everyone has said, so give em both a go and see which you like. Either way you won't be disappointed.
Oh and just to add fuel - My choice was down to P1 or Evo 6 Makkinen in the end, which is an awesome car! Came down to cost and the deal I could get in the end....

The UK Euro official STI's are going to have 260hp plus more weight. I don't know what torque they will have and how it will be spread throughout the rev range which is an important factor as to which one one will be quicker. The P1 is supposed to have 280hp.
The best is to get yourself down to a dealer and test drive a P1 and then to an importer to test drive an STI, although the STI will probably be a Jap spec car.

Hmm..I've spent most of the last week thinking about new P1 vs waiting for the UK WRX STI. Wouldn't go for a current import WRX STI (warranty, engine characterics for UK roads etc - IMHO of course)
My thoughts:
- P1 is fantastic, but last years model
- the inside of a P1, apart from the seats is now starting to look really outdated
- a new currently unregistered P1 was probably made at least a year ago
- despite being unable to sell 1000 P1s in around 18 months, dealers are still trying to sell at or very close to list price. In fact they now tell me that demand is picking up so they're going back to list price for the last few. Still can't sell them tho'
- I can't get a compelling p/ex from my dealer - he's effectively offering me £12.5 - 13K for a 10,000 mile UK MY00 Jan 2000/V in immaculate condition against an unregistered P1
- the new MY01 shape is growing on me. Some UK300 styling aspects are pretty good, but they could be better. Prodrive have a second opportunity for the UK WRX STI I suspect
- if you take a simplistic view that Prodrive took the old shape STI 4/5/6 and turned it into the P1 then they did a great job of taking a car built for Japan and changing it for the UK. If they do that for the WRX STI....
- as I've posted elsewhere this morning, I was v.impressed with the abilty of a standard MY01 to keep up with 3 P1's in a convoy to Goodwood yesterday, travelling at a "steady" speed...where "steady" does not have its usual meaning . If you add another 40-50bhp and give it the right torque charcteristics....
I think you can see where this is going...I'm gonna wait for the UK WRX STI - depreciation on my current Scoob is levelling out (a bit!) and I'm happy to wait a while.

Martinm, I thinkyour dealers giving you a sh1te deal there. I got 14.5k for a 99 with 34k on the clock. And a discount on the car!
If you're interested in a P1 I'd shop around.
I've heard of other dealers doing the same type of deal.

I think for P1 money you could probably get an STi7 RA V-Limited
I know what I'd rather have....
Matt
P.S. But I wouldn't be able to resist doing the bigger wheels, lower suspension, morrettes, etc.etc.etc

Surely we buy these cars for the way they drive! hands up who still like the looks of the old Escort Cossie, Lancia Integrale, Audi Quattro to name but a few. These rally breed cars are still well sort after. I'm sure in years to come cars like the 22b, P1 and RB5 will be the same. A bit like the old Golf Gti, pug 205 and clio Willams. great fun, the way it was meant to be. So you know what car I would recommend.

Without wishing to open up an STi vs P1 saga.......
I'd go for a P1 - putting all the 'better/worse looks', 'old body vs new', etc etc to the side <sigh> - certainly if its an import STi you are thinking of, first thing to remember is the insurance of these vehicles....... The P1 is a UK car, and although not cheap, insuring it will be considerably cheaper than that of an STi import. My concerns are the next 12 months when insurance is certain to rocket again - and I believe you cant drive a car unless its insured
Personally, I think that performance imports days are numbered - insurance will be its ultimate killer

Cant let all these P1 boys dominate the thread. Choice of cars is down to loads of factors.
Here's some things in favour of the STI.
One basic question is are you going to leave it as std P1 or STI. If your plan is to heavily mod the car, then the new STI is probably a better bet.
I think most on here would/should agree that the STI VII should be a better base car. For a start you have proper brakes on the STI where the P1 has crappy four pots. The STI has a stiffer chassis. Fit Leda, Bilstein adjustables etc, and all the critisisms in EVO mag should go away. Youve a nice 6 speed gearbox vs 5 speed. For now exclusivity. Go to a meet and everyone will be all over you.
You've a better interior. A better car over long distances.
Against it
My biggest fear would be if you have a prang, or have gearbox problems. The amount of spares in the UK for the STI will be relatively few. How long would you be off the road ?
Insurance - it will be higher
Servicing - ok if you have a local specialist
Official STI - the STI is going to be Type approved, and is rumoured to be on show at Frankfurt. Given this, a UK version might be available very early 2001. This will dent the value of your car.
My choice was the UK300 whilst I wait for the STI instead of another P1. Would I make the same choice again - in all honesty I'm not sure.
One major problem with the P1 is that old farts drive them - eh Bob

see the 'old' ( better ) shape sti geting a drubbing eh?
well, i have to say, IMHO, that my sti5 eats for breakfast the bag of poo uk my00ppp i had. it had all the prodrive goodies, suspension etc, yet it was crap. sh1te interior, sh1te performance with hesitation, generally not what you'd expect from a uk car with dealer approved mods.oh, and the general service from dealers was woeful, as was their 'expertise', and the depreciation
sti5 is fine on the road, handles better, has warp speed oomph, will give just about ANY car a run for its money, and you can have, if yer lucky like me, an obviously cherished, tastefully and sensibly modded sti5 for 15.5k.
go ahead mate, if paying 30k for a reworked sti makes yer happy, but before you buy, speak to arron bird and others, and see whta the paint and interiors like, not to mention the probs with brakes and wheels.
get an import, get it serviced by ENTHUSIASTS, and save a feckin fortune.
sorry guys, hope i aint caused offence, i'm just narked that i used to be suckered by all this 'i must get a uk car for warranty twaddle', i just wised up and saved some dough thats all.
however, you have to do what YOU feel is right.
P1 or new sti 7? P1, purely on looks alone!

thanks for all the responses.
I was planning to wait for the official UK Sti and I already have my name down for the first one with my local dealer.
Looks like I will just have to wait till I can compare them both for myself whilst continuing to potter round in the current motor.

You may want to check with the dealer - i dont think the uk sti is the full "P1 vII" if you follow - its only 260 bhp.
Its interesting that classic shape drivers slag the MY01 because its not "raw" enough, yet Evo mag says that the STI 7 is a lot more raw than the P1 and is a handfull.
Suggest you get a test drive and see whats best for your style.
Cant see the point in buying an obsolete car that dealers cant shift and will end up costing you a fortune in depreciation (flame suite on) myself. And its a more raw experience according to our beloved Evo...
