Our office received word yesterday, that three of our staff had been involved in an accident on the M6.

They were in a Renault Clio which had just stopped on the hard shoulder. Two in the front, and one in the back.

The Clio was struck from behind, and the emergency services had to cut the rear passenger out of the vehicle and she was taken by air ambulance to hospital - She has severe spinal damage and is paralysed from the chest down.

Yesterday was her first day back at work after a holiday in Australia.

Eye-witness accounts say a Subaru Impreza Turbo suddenly hoofed it from a group of traffic and decided to undertake an HGV by using the hard shoulder.

Suddenly, I feel rather conspicuous - Everybody keeps asking "You drive one of those, don't you?"

This isn't an exercise in blame - I just want everyone to think twice about dodgy driving antics and to be thankful for good health and our loved ones...

Awful news mate. There are always a few prats that give everyone else a bad name. Nobody in your office should blame you just because you happen to drive a Scooby as well.

Why had they stopped on the hard shoulder? - you should never stop there unless it's unavoidable, it is the most incredibly dangerous part of the highway. Sounds tragic though.

There is just no accounting for the total stupidity of some people

Sorry to hear about your collegue

Obviously, it could have been any car, but some people think that because they have a fast car it gives them a god-given right to not to have to sit in traffic like everyone else Not a dig, just a general observation.

Poor, poor girl Did the Police get the Impreza driver responsible for ruining the rest of this girls' life?

It makes me so bloody mad when I see people undertaking on the hard shoulder, no matter what car they're driving. Unfortunately I've seen a fair few Scooby drivers doing really stupid things on the motorway too, the last of which was on Sunday on the M6 also.

Fookin Idiots They should be banned for life and given a prison sentance, that will give them time to think about why they ruined somebodies life

Horrendous and tragic.
However, if this were an Evo which had done this, then the same post would've appeared on that forum.
There is no accounting for this kind of stupidity, but lets remember that it's the driver that caused this, not the car.
However we'll all be tarnished with the same brush because of it.

I see this sort of thing at least once or twice a week when driving down the M4, (usually rep type cars). Terrible thing to happen, but it reinforces the police advice that if you stop on the hard shoulder, get out of the car and up the bank as quickly as possible.....

Shame it wasn't the Scoob driver that needed cutting out. Simple fact is the more Imprezas on the road the more likely some prat will own one.

Five door on the M/way last week decided it was to much trouble to accelerate past an arctic before his exit. So undertook and did around half a mile on the hard shoulder before joining the slip road

Terrible news and all those involved (bar the lunatic) have my sympathies.

You should not feel in any way guilty because you drive a Scooby.
I don't think The entire Mondeo driving population should feel guilty if one of their gang causes a smash.

That would be a lot of upset people!

This tragic news.

People that undertake on the hard shoulder should face an automatic ban. I was stuck in the M25 mess on Monday and three B<Ws went down the hard shoulder. In two hours I travelled 10 miles at no point was I even tempted to think about following them. Just as well really a we crawled along we came accross them again, stopped on the hard shoulder with a Policeman and his T5.

Shame the traffic stopped again so I could watch them getting tickets!

I agree with all of you.

I have no information on the condition of the scoob driver.

Here's hoping that bruising/swelling etc, is causing much of her symptoms and that she'll be OK.

I hope she gets well soon and as you say, hopefully its just alot of swelling etc thats causing the problem for her
I really do hope that they got the scoob driver (very good possibility) and that they throw the book at him and loose the key

So what - it was an Impreza. What's the big deal? You get ********* driving all marques. I don't see there's any need to be ashamed or 'conspicuous' of being a Scoob driver....

Hi there,

Hope the young lass makes a quick and full recovery.

I saw a similar situation last sat night.

I was driving along in the fast lane (overtaking a lorry) and these little t*ats in a festa in the nearside lane. They decided not to do a normal overtake but an undertake at ~85 Mph.

Later on in traffic it behind me flashing lights etc. (at nigh on 90. If I had breaked they would be in my car) I decided that I wasnt having this, when the road cleared I accelerated to over 110 mph and lost them in the mirror. It wasnt big and it wasnt clever, on my part or theirs but it annoys me so much these idiots, in their junk cars trying to race anyone and anything irrespective of danger.

On the other hand, there are some really sensible young drivers. There was one in a M reg Wrx the other day and he followed for a while and we came to a slip road and I fully expected him to roar past me irrespective of the consequences, but he didnt. He didnt even rev his engine or anything (yes it was moving ) and we was just a very good driver IMHO. Well done fella. If only all young drivers where this road concious.

Unfortunatly you get good and bad wherever you go.

MarkO - I see what you're saying, but at the same time, it's human nature to feel conspicuous (spelt right??) in this type of situation.

Rik has every right to feel how he feels - it's his office mates who are "pointing the finger"..... The phrase "made to feel as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit" comes to mind.....

I'd feel a little awkward, but at the same time, I would try not to be intimidated by anybody else. After all, it's not his fault is it?

Sorry to hear about this Rik, hopefully, as you say, it's just trauma swelling and in time, things will be better.

Not that anybody there knows me, but please pass on my best wishes mate

Nat21 - what a load of utter, utter b*llocks.

Why would a rep never drive on the hard shoulder in a 318 - then get a new scoob and start driving like a ****. if they're a **** they'll drive like a **** in any car - Mondeo, Impreza, Fiesta whatever.

..and how many reps are going to have a new WRX when the company car tax is based on CO2 emissions and WRX's have some of the highest emissions going, putting it in the top tax bracket?

If anything it's the older scoobs that are getting cheaper and are falling into the hands of the 'boy racer' brigade that are causing more trouble.

btw - i'm not rep.

The driver should be charged with at least a GBH or attempted murder.
Anyway, the highway code did say that if the car breaks down, all occupants should leave the car & wait for rescue behind the motorway barriers.

Sorry to hear about the crash. What a prat.
I drive a Lorry for a living and a 300bhp Scooby when i want a bit of fun. So I spend most of my time on the road.

All cars are potentialy dangerous. V high performace cars like scoobys etc have to be treated with respect or you will kill yourself or someone else. I have a huge amount of driving experience, but realise everytime I have a bit of fun in the sccoby I am only a few seconds away from death. The faster you drive the more dangerous it is. We are all human and we all will make mistakes. I drive very very defensively but sometimes very quickly - or very slowly if I am in my lorry.

I realy feel strongly that after people have passed their driving test. People should go on a brief compulsory course that talks about RWD/FWD/AWD the physics of weight distribution. Road conditions. How to drive defensively. The consequences of traffic accidents, the blood - pictures of dead people etc

I know this would cost money but surely this may make people more aware of how potentialy leathal their car/lorry is and perhaps make them think twice before chucking a high performance car onto the hard shoulder and maiming some one.

Sorry about the rant, but I do feel strongly about this. and I hate old gits that sit in the middle lane.
